Wednesday Outfit: Styling a Barbour Coat

Nov 18, 2020

Today’s outfit looks like it would be perfect for traveling the English Moors.  Alas, we’re all stuck here for a while.  But that doesn’t mean that we can’t look chic for a Thanksgiving celebration at home or for a casual work day.

The hero of this outfit is the Barbour coat, or maybe the combat boots, I can’t decide.  Regardless, this photo of unknown origin is the epitome of relaxed chic.  Here’s how to recreate it.

Coat // A waxed cotton Barbour coat is a wonderful edition to any preppy-cool wardrobe.  This Acorn jacket is a classic.  Prefer something more affordable?  Try this Land’s End coat or this Sam Edelman jacket.

Sweater // This marled sweater from Ann Taylor is perfect for this outfit.  It’s the perfect sweater for this season and for years to come.  Plus-size?  Try this sweater from NYDJ.

Shirt // A tunic-length button up is perfect for wearing under sweaters.  The longer length makes layering a breeze.  This one from Foxcroft is a nice option.

Leggings // You know you love a pair of leggings when you bypass the five other pairs of leggings in the dryer until you find that pair.  That’s how I feel about my Vuori leggings.  When I am in the mood to wear them (which is every time they’re clean), no other pair will do.

Boots // Combat boots are apparently back in fashion.  The 16-year-old who wore Dr. Marten’s to school every day is pleased, but I’m not sure my calves are up to the task.  This trendy, embossed pair from Crown Vintage are cool, and under-$100.

Bracelets // If you’re going to layer medium-width bracelets, they need to be cool.  This one from Fallon and the cuff from Kendra Scott definitely qualify.  On their own, they make a statement.  Together, they make an impact.

Nail Polish // The red polish in the inspiration photo really brings a femininity to the otherwise relaxed, slightly masculine look.  It’s a pop of color that sets off the whole look.  I chose this incredible Dior polish in the most sophisticated bottle that I’ve ever seen.  It would make a great gift.

Lovely outfit! But we can’t breeze past belle being a doc martens person as a teen!

  3. Meredith says:

Question on the Vuori leggings, please: could the drawstring be removed, or is it sewn in? I prefer a flat front so my tops lie smoothly. I purchased the Vuori joggers on your recommendation and they are great!

I just looked at mine, it appears to be removable, but I’m not sure what removing it would increase the stretching out.

  4. Clara says:

Never thought I’d see the day you recommend combat boots but I am HERE for it!

Love the idea of a collared shirt under a turtleneck or mockneck! Have a pair of 18-holes I was saving for my daughter but maybe I’ll try them on while they’re in style again. This is a great look and I feel like the jacket could be any kind of field jacket and still pull it off!

Just curious if anyone has a set of qualifications for leggings that work with outfits like this? I seem to have workout leggings, lounge leggings, but nothing that really fits with wearing with a nice sweater or tunic. If not these Vuori leggings what are some other types you like to wear as normal clothes?

  6. Jess says:

Combat boots for the win! I’ve been wearing them for years and I can’t get enough! Maybe one of the few trends that were great the first time in the 90s AND now.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
