Zoom Outfit Ideas, Part III.

Oct 22, 2020

And we’re back with three more Zoom outfits that are perfect for projecting professionalism and competence during your daily meetings.  Hopefully, I’ll soon have to worry about what to wear on bottom again, but until that day, here are some styles for above the elbows.

You may recognize this J.Crew schoolboy blazer from Monday’s post.  It’s a lovely, vintage-looking piece with a color that really pops on camera.  And it’s also 50% off right now with code FALLTIME.

This Banana Republic tie-neck sweater has been on my wishlist for a few weeks now.  I love the 1950s Mad Men style.  It also comes in black and the most luxurious-looking dark brown.

For the accessories, I added this fabulous berry-nude lipstick from Nabla.  It doesn’t have the striking red or blue undertones many berry lipsticks have, making it more of a neutral.  And these simple hoops come from Shashi, my favorite mid-price brand.

Need something on the bottom?  I recommend ivory pants.  Not into the all ivory thing?  Jeans or navy blue pants.

If you don’t wear prints often or if you’re scared of them, a neutral print like this H&M long sleeve blouse is a good place to start.  The print is bold, with good movement, but the black and white color palette keeps it easy to wear.  Plus-size? Try this short-sleeve Croft and Barrow top with a similar print.

On top, I added a relaxed Purl Stitch Cardigan from Vero Moda.  This may be the ultimate desk cardigan.  No buttons, a slightly balloon sleeve, a cool knit pattern, and it’s under-$50.

For the accessories, I chose these fantastic enamel hoops from Express. I’d also line my eyes with this deep copper Wunder2 Super Stay Eyeshadow Stick.  (Having a backyard wedding?  This stick stayed on my eyes all day, no smudging at mine.)

This one is a relaxed take on one of my favorite work outfits, but I swapped the cashmere sweater for my Daily Ritual sweatshirt.  No one on Zoom will know the difference.

Layering a simple sweatshirt over a button-up blouse is an easy fix for looking professional on Zoom.  The collar just lifts the whole look.  But if you want to make it a bit more fun, try a sweatshirt with a fun message or in a fun color.  I also really like this heart-embroidered sweatshirt.

For the accessories, I started with this mixed-size pearl cluster necklace from J.Crew.  I also like this ribbon and pearl necklace from Talbot’s.

Finish it off with a bold red lip, like MAC Ruby Woo.  Also, I recommend wearing your hair up with this look and popping the collar on the shirt.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
