Wednesday Outfit: Fall Meets Casual Friday

Sep 30, 2020

The simplicity of this outfit is what makes it so chic.  None of the elements is particularly trendy or bold, but together, they create an outfit that somehow feels special.  An outfit that anyone could pull off.  So let’s get started.

When I spotted this outfit on The Respect the Shoes Instagram, all I could think was,”I need that in my life.”  It’s the perfect relaxed but preppy fall look.  Wear it to the office.  Wear it apple picking.  Wear it to a patio lunch.  It’s a lovely blend of professional and cozy.

Jacket // Some of you may recognize this as the J.Crew Sophie Sweater Blazer, but it’s not on the website in this gorgeous olive color.  So this is either last year’s model or an in-store exclusive.  (Grrr…)  So I swapped in this olive J.Crew Factory Coatigan instead.

Prefer the blazer length?  Try this olive Land’s End sweater blazer or this Charter Club sweater blazer.  Plus-size?  The J.Crew pieces run to 3X, and the Charter Club jacket runs to 2X.

Shirt // I love the look of this striped poplin shirt with the olive sweater.  It’s not something I would have thought of myself (as I usually wear a pale blue poplin one or a striped tee instead), but I love it.  It feels fresh.

I found the striped shirt in the image at J.Crew.  I also found this wonderful popover from J.McLaughlin; it has a thin, wider set stripe.  Or for a wider stripe, try this one from the Gap.

Jeans // Let’s be real, whatever jeans zip and feel comfortable six-months into a pandemic.  I put on mine for date night this weekend and, woof.  I’ve had my eye on these affordable Wit & Wisdom girlfriend jeans.

Shoes // These Mizrahi leopard moccasins are a nice alternative to slippers if you need to leave the house.  Of course, if you don’t want to wear real shoes, these Target slippers are a good choice.

Bag // This flap satchel from Cole Haan is a classic that you’ll use for years.  It’s perfect for errands or travel.  Looking for a more affordable alternative?  Try this discounted Cole Haan grand series bag for just under $100.

Earrings // These SSense earrings are a little spendy at $125, but the mix of silver and gold metals makes them a wonderful piece if you like to layer different jewelry tones.  One piece that has both pulls it all together.  Need a similar piece for less?  Try these Lucky Brand drops or these Argento Vivo hoops.

Styling // I would wear my hair down with this outfit.  Straight, wavy, whatever you have time for.  I would also wear a simple, sheer lip color like Clinique’s black honey.

I recently picked up that J. Crew shirt and I love this look as a more casual way to style it, rather than a blazer. I would probably style it with a pair of loafer mules in snakeskin embossed leather, which are about as slipperish as I have on hand. Also feel you on the jeans situation, so many lovely lovely jeans that are just a tad too snug to feel comfortable in. Thank goodness for a couple of pairs of Athleta jeans — not even close to as stylish but so wonderfully stretchy!

I’m also wondering if this look could be accomplished with an olive field jacket, I don’t really wear cardigans but it seems like it would be pretty close.

How did you know I’ve been struggling to style my olive cardigan? Light blue striped shirt to the rescue!

  3. Christine says:

Wait…but…now I NEED that Sophie sweater in olive. I don’t live near a JCrew store: Anyone have any idea if it’s there?

Not sure if it’s in store, but if you are into searching resale (Poshmark, eBay, etc) they call the color “Cilantro”. I haven’t found one in my size yet, but I’m not giving up! Happy hunting…

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
