Wednesday Outfit: Fresh, but Casual

Sep 23, 2020

Since my newsletter, Break Things (on Instagram Stories and Substack) is very similar to the Weekly Edit, I’m going to move the Monday Outfit to Wednesday.  And today’s outfit is for weekend, work-from-home or just running errands around town.

If you’re staying at home, Kendi Everyday is a blog you should check out.  She makes simple, easy, casual outfits look cool.  She always manages to add the little extras that make jeans and a t-shirt look chic.  Here’s how I would recreate her joggers look.

Jacket // I feel like a broken record on this LL.Bean jacket and I’m totally fine with it.  For five years, I have been singing the praises of this versatile utility jacket.  It’s heavy, well-made, and stylish AF.  It also comes in petite and plus.

Want something with a slouchier look?  This Gap jacket has a slightly more relaxed feel.  For a more unique look, try this Rails jacket in navy with tonal star print.

T-Shirt // White v-neck tees, you should have one or two in your wardrobe because they’re great for wearing solo or layered.  This L’Agence tee is a blogger favorite, a little sheer and a little fitted.  Personally, I wear my tees a lot, so I prefer to just snap up Everlane tees or Old Navy tees.

Joggers // Vuori joggers are the bomb.  They’re slim-fitting, wear like iron, soft as a cloud.  But they’re a little spendy, so I chose these Jockey joggers and these Zella Lived-In joggers to show also.  Plus-size? These Hue joggers look like a good buy.  Petite?  The Vuori joggers are cropped and slim fitting, so a number of my petite friends just buy those.

Shoes // I love, love these Veja sneakers.  I keep putting them in my cart, but I own these black Adidas, so I can’t really justify the purchase.  (Even though I really want them.)  I like them because they’re sporty in a very stylish way, and they’re not the same white Vejas everyone is wearing.

Accessories // This Kita backpack from AllSaints is the only backpack that I would ever own.  It’s convertible, so you can use it as a tote or hobo also.  The details are phenomenal.  I didn’t buy the olive one at the Nordstrom Sale, and I have been kicking myself every day since.

The necklace is Gorjana from Nordstrom Rack.  Seriously, if you’re ever in need of jewelry, just hit the Rack.  It’s so affordable and they have every designer you could ever want.

These ZeroUV sunglasses are <$20, and the best.  They’re perfectly oversized, look chic, wear well.  And I hope they restock the colors soon, because I need a brown pair.

Love those Veja sneakers and I also keep looking at them and doing nothing. Now they are down to only TWO sizes and neither of them are mine. Darn it. Great look!

Thank the Powers That Be that the AllSaints backpack doesn’t come in a camel/cognac/British tan color! I just splurged on the Vuori joggers, and I was able to resist the siren lure only because my gray bag collection is possibly on the more-than-I-really-need end of the spectrum.

Thank you for all the hard work you do for this community, Abra. I’ve learned a lot from you about fashion and styling, of course, but what I truly value is your honesty about mental health and your encouragement to delve more deeply into the issues that confront us as a society and a nation. 2020 is our annus horribilus, and as The Queen said with admirble understatement in 1992, “. . . not a year on which I shall look back with undiluted pleasure.”

  3. Ann says:

So, i actually bought those veja sneakers back in March, but both shoes have developed the same large tear in the nylon mesh material right over the big toe where the nylon meets the leather material for the laces! This is my first and only pair of vejas, and while they are incredibly comfortable and i love the style, I’ve just been baffled by how quickly the mesh wore out. Anyone else have issues with the durability? I really hope it’s a fluke. I like the brand’s style and sustainability, but have been hesitant to try again.

  4. Em says:

That Gorjana pendant is a perfect dupe for a retired Tiffany Elsa Peretti disc necklace! I happen to own the silver but may pick up the gold Gorjana one -can’t say no to $19 vs $900 (even resale).

  5. Mrs. Jones says:

I own and love those sunglasses. I just ordered the jockey joggers because they have a long inseam. Thanks for the rec!

  6. Jessie says:

How do those Everlane t-shirts wash/dry? I keep getting t-shirts that come out of the dryer with wrinkles/folds at the seams. I’m living in t-shirts right now and don’t have the space to air dry them all.

  7. Katherine says:

The Vuori joggers may be my favorite purchase of the year. THANK YOU for recommending them. I managed to wear my black pair for about 4 hours before buying another pair in grey. My bank account will hate me later but it’s nice to have a small amount of joy right now.

  8. Rachel says:

You mentioned that the LLbean jacket is heavy. How heavy? Is it comfortable to wear more like a sweater or part of your outfit? Or is it too heavy and uncomfortable to wear all day sitting at a desk?

    • Belle says:

Not too heavy to wear as part of an outfit. The fabric is a strong canvas, but not lined or hot. They also make one lined with fleece if you’re looking for the warmth. I wear mine inside with an outfit all the time.

  9. caitlin f says:

Love Kendi! She’s got like 4-5 inches on me height-wise, but she tends to wear an 8/10 and is thus a much better representation of how a garment’ll fit on me vs. a size 00 influencer.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
