The Range: The Perfect Isolation Sweater

Aug 11, 2020

I’m done with summer.  I have enough jersey dresses to get me through the hot weather.  And since I have no events on the calendar, I might as well start thinking about fall.

My favorite sweater three years running is the Free People Ottoman Slouchy Tunic. This is the perfect sweater for the coming fall/winter in isolation.  It’s oversized, comfortable, cozy without being hot, and so chic with skinny pants or a slim-fitting skirt.  And since it sells out every fall, I would recommend getting yours early.

I wear a size 6, and I can wear an XS or S.  I own four of these sweaters, but I highly recommend the black and ivory.  I wear them with leggings, ponte pants and jeans all winter long.

They are machine washable on delicate/cold.  But they are not, I repeat, not to go in the dryer.  I speak from experience when I tell you that your tunic length sweater becomes a less-flattering hip length if it winds up in the dryer.

YES the ottoman tunic!! Holy grail sweater! I bought two of these on your recommendation in cream and a light blue chambray color. Having trouble deciding between black, nutmeg, or pink for my next.

    • Stephanie says:

I have a nutmeg, and a black one on the way. 90% of my wardrobe is black, and the nutmeg has been a really nice change for me. It is very true to the colour on the models, and I love it.

  2. MargE says:

I have 4 of these sweaters, too! Black, white, bright pink and red. I get compliments the most on the red. Would 5 be too much?!

  3. Cait says:

Is it bad that I’m actually hoping for cheap knockoffs of this sweater this year since it’s been so popular? I’m all for spending the $$$ for quality, but this just isn’t in the financial cards this year, even with sales. I’d snap up a Target or Amazon version in a heartbeat though!

  4. Jess says:

Can you share a little bit about how the xs vs small fit? I too am a 6 and while I’d like a sort of loose sweater, I definitely don’t want it hugely baggy. But am afraid the xs will be too tight.

    • Belle says:

I wouldn’t describe the XS small as tight. They both have a loose, oversize fit. I like the S a little better as it is a little longer. But it has virtually the same cut as the XS.

  5. Oam says:

How does the ottoman tunic sweater look on a gal with hips?
    (Waist 32 hips 41)?

    • Belle says:

You’ll be fine in a small. I’m running 39-40in hips most winters.

    • eliza says:

Similar proportions here and I LOVE this sweater and have it in a small. I tried xs, s, and m, and liked the small the best. I wore it 2-3 a week at the beginning of quarantine…no shame.I find my biggest issue with sweaters is how they look after being washed, but as long you air dry it, it holds it’s size and shape and has zero pilling.

Finally pulled the trigger on this – looking forward to joining the club!
