Four Ways: A White T-Shirt

Jun 11, 2020

Some of us are headed back to work.  Some of us are still at home.  Even if you’re still in leggings and dressing up means a t-shirt dress that’s as comfortable as a nightgown, we could all use a little fashion right now.  So here’s a four ways that’s a mix of business casual and professional.

T-Shirt. Vince Cotton Jersey T-Shirt

Lots of good white tees in the market these days.  A friend gave me this one from Vince as a birthday gift, and the shape and drape are perfect, even if it is a little more sheer than I usually like.  If I want a tee on the semi-sheer side, I’ll just stick to the $18 Everlane tee.

If opacity is important to you, LL Bean has this v-neck and scoop neck in a fabric that’s less sheer than other brands.  The tees also come in petite and plus.

One. J.Crew Regent Blazer // Natalie B Dion Pendant // Cheetah Rothy’s // AG Boyfriend Jeans

A blazer, comfortable jeans, and a pair of Rothy’s, basically my uniform for actual campaign stops.  I own this J.Crew blazer in the camel, and it is worth every.single.penny.  I’m waiting until I find a full-time gig to buy it in the navy.

I like the look of a simple pendant necklace with a v-neck top.  The complementary lines are really flattering.  This Natalie B one is nice.  I also found this gold drop pendant and pearl pendant necklace, both under-$40.

I was on the hunt for more relaxed shoes to wear with leggings, and black loafer Rothy’s are my new favorite.  So why not buy the Cheetah too?  I did find that my size 8.5 feet needed a 9, however.

Two. Rag & Bone Rylie One Button Blazer // Boss Vaxine Structured Pencil // Target Top Handle Satchel // Express Enamel Hoops

You know how I feel about white blazers for summer…and fall…and winter…and spring.  This Rag & Bone blazer is on deep discount and the slightly more modern shape is really lovely.  This Kobi Halperin blazer and Zadig & Voltaire blazer are both on sale as well.  Looking for something under-$100?  This collarless BlankNYC blazer and Love Token shawl collar are both worth a look.

If you need suiting for a post-COVID world, may I suggest now as a time to buy?  This Boss skirt is beyond sale-priced.  Usually $250, no under-$75, with sizes still available.  Scroll down to search through their wares at Saks, but this basic black suit and dress combo is under-$350.

This Target bag is very reasonably priced with a ladylike look that makes it a nice addition to your bag wardrobe.  Add in the enamel hoops to make it a bit more modern.

Don’t need suits?  Not feeling dressing up?  Keep everything from the waist up.  Throw on Lululemon’s new Align jogger and a pair of Adidas sneakers and push up the sleeves on the jacket.

Three. Madewell Denim Jacket // LL Bean Utility Pants // Hazen Flat Leather Sandals // Luv AJ Boxer Hoops

Utility pants, not just in your freshman yearbook photo anymore.  These LL Bean utility pants are super comfortable and relaxed without being too relaxed.  If you’re hunting for something a bit prettier, Chico’s has a pair of soft utility pants with a bow waist that are very cool (and also in tall sizes).

This Madewell jacket is a nice basic if you need something to throw on over leggings or t-shirt dresses.  If you prefer something darker, the Daily Ritual jacket at Amazon is just right.  Plus-size?  Try this Pilcro jacket from Anthro or this Old Navy option.

A simple sandal is the perfect choice for a relaxed outfit.  I added these unique, but approachable, box hoops from Luv AJ to finish everything out.  And don’t forget the Ray-Ban aviators.

Four. Ted Baker Linnett Pleated Skirt // Veja Lace-Up Sneaker // Coach Turnlock Pouch // Baublebar Pisa Headband

I just wanted to do something pretty.  We’re not going out much around here, even though we’re in phase 2, but I cannot wait to eat brunch again with people like an adult.  And this is the perfect outfit for it.

This Ted Baker skirt is so cute with its bird print, and so discounted.  Actually, the whole TB website is something of a fire sale.  This beautifully textured lace top was too good to pass up.

The Veja sneakers make an appearance, though these bow sandals would work too.  Add a bright green bag to bring out the pops of color in the skirt. (Coach is also having a pretty good sale right now.)  And instead of jewelry, how about a gold headband?  Just a little something extra.

omg, I bought the Boss skirt and I love it. The entire suit (jacket and pants) are on sale too… And no kidding, I was going to email you asking how to style the skirt! Love this line up.

  2. Monica T says:

I’ve always resisted the white blazer siren song, because kids and dogs and me and gravity are an evil combination. But I just saw that J Crew makes a stretch linen Going Out Blazer in white, and that sounds lovely. Like everything else, on sale now.

  3. MM says:

I love all of these! Thanks so much for putting this together.

  4. Diane says:

I ordered the J.Crew blazer in camel in February directly from J.Crew, it was out of stock and expected to be back in stock in May, then it was pushed out to June, and now I just got a notice that it might be available in August so they’re going to cancel my order. Hope they get their supply issues figured out.

  5. Diane says:

Can anyone shed any light on how BOSS fits? Do I order a size larger than my usual BR/AT size?

    • carolyn says:

Yes – also interested in input on Boss fit. Love the green skirt, and have a couple items in my cart!

      • Belle says:

Runs a bit small. Basically if you have part of your body that is bigger than another part (pear shaped, etc), size up for that part. So I should bae a 6 skirt, I’m an 8.

  6. Kate says:

Would LOVE to see some suggestions for a more affordable version of that gorgeous green Coach bag!

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
