Monday Outfit: Linen Pants for WFH

May 18, 2020

It’s amazing how self-isolation has reduced my wardrobe down to the essential pieces, a handful of outfits that make life easier.  This outfit pulls together a handful of multi-season staple pieces to create a simple, stylish look for working from home or running essential errands.

If you need casual outfit ideas, Kendi Everyday is a good place to start.  She focuses on affordable, casual fashion and often finds chic pieces at great prices.  This outfit was part of a capsule collection of work from home pieces that she did a few weeks ago, and it looks a lot like an outfit that I’ve been wearing often.

Jacket. How many times have I shared this L.L. Bean jacket?  I’ve lost count, but it’s probably comparable to the amount of times that I have worn it.  It’s just a well-made utility jacket that comes in a wide range of colors, but is light enough to be worn indoors over a simple tee without being too hot. It also comes in petite and plus.

If you want something a bit different, this Splendid camo jacket caught my eye.  I also like this cropped, slouchy jacket from Pistola is also worth a look.

T-Shirt. This Frame striped tee is a bit of an expensive choice, but it’s a great basic.  This Gibson novelty tee has an adorable puff sleeve and a more affordable price point.  I also love this Talbot’s square-neck tee in a black and white stripe.

Pants. Ah, linen pants.  Until now, the wrinkly linen would have driven me nuts.  But since I’m just working from home, I can embrace the fullness of their being — the comfort, the ease, the temperature control — without the creases getting in the way.

These Vince Camuto pants in black look perfect.  The wide leg fit is really nice, and they’re well-priced for the quality.  Looking for a more affordable option?  Try these Old Navy pants with a paper-bag waist or these slimmer fitting pants from Chico’s.

Shoes. These easy Kurt Geiger sandals pack a huge style punch (especially for <$85).  These Gala flat sandals from Sam Edelman are also worth a look.

Accessories.  Soko has an interesting brand story.  The pieces are made by female artisans in Kenya who are compensated fair trade value.  They make some wonderfully simple pieces like these knotted earrings.  The whole line is really beautiful and modern.  This brass and teak interlocking bangle is another piece that really caught my eye.

Lastly, I threw in a simple pair of aviators because they capture the cool vibe of the outfit.  I’ve been going on a lot of lunchtime sanity walks, and my sunglasses are always with me.  Because protecting your eyes from the sun is so important.  If you prefer a polarized aviator, these ones from QVC are under-$100.

Sorry I’m sure you’ve answered this before but what size do you take in the LL Bean utility jacket?

I wear a medium in the L.L. Bean jacket. I’m 5’7″, 133 lbs on a very good day, and my bra size is 32F. The jacket is comfortably loose — not enough to look too big but roomy enough to wear a thick cotton sweater underneath without any tightness in the chest or shoulers. There’s a drawstring thingy at the waist, and that helps with fit. I have the jacket in two shades of blue (but really they’re so similar I could have gotten by with either one — the perils of online shopping and not enough energy to re-pack and make a trip to the post office), the pinky-mauve, and the gray. I also have the lined version of the green jacket, which i
s great for the fall-to-winter transition. I don’t have Abra’s green incarnation only because I already had a similar one when I first read her rave!

*Sigh* Sorry about the typos and weird spacing. My WFH office assistant is a two-year-old who is convinced I can’t type without her help. . .

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
