State of the Blog: Why I’m Blogging During a Pandemic

Mar 19, 2020

We’ve all had our lives profoundly changed, and our priorities sharply altered in a very short period of time.  And the speed at which everything is changing is just breathtaking.

Two weeks ago, I sat down to plan my editorial calendar for the spring. My notes are awash in links for cute work dresses, clutches for summer weddings, and closet organizing tips. I was working on a spring capsule collection that I was pretty excited about. But that isn’t reflective of the world we live in right now.

I’ve thought a lot about what blogging in the time of coronavirus looks like. Shopping has understandably taken a backseat to our new priorities. It’s inevitable that sales will be light, revenue will drop, and my income will suffer.  But with so much going on in the world, I’ve decided to stay focused on what is best about this blog, the community.

I write Capitol Hill Style for an incredible community of women, and I intend to keep this little corner of the Internet as normal as possible.  There will be posts about fashion and skincare and cocktails and whatever feels relevant to my life right now.  Because in a time of deep uncertainty, it’s oddly comforting to discuss whether or not anyone actually hems her leggings.*  And we all need a bit of levity right now.

With love, Abra

*The answer is yes, but only because Lululemon offers complimentary tailoring.

Yes! Please keep things coming! I’m trying to carve out as much normalcy as I can these days and would love a respite from the constant stream of news.

  2. Emily says:

Love the normalcy of your posts. Please keep them coming!

  3. SG says:

Truly appreciate that you are doing this! I think we’re all looking for whatever bit of pre-pandemic “normal” we can find these days (while acknowledging that you can’t avoid the effects of it all together).

  4. Jill says:

Oh yes! Please keep your posts coming. I adore your blog and it’s so refreshing to read in light of all the scary news. And thanks for the tip on hemming your leggings…I had no idea and hate when they bunch at my ankles. Happy Thursday!

  5. Sehar says:

Thank you! Having a place that let’s me as a DC insider type stop thinking about how to save the economy for a minute is great for my emotional health

  6. Katel says:

Fun fact about hemming at Lulu. My neighborhood dry cleaner does the tailoring for DMV Lulu stores. When we can shop again in person know that you’re indirectly supporting a local small business.

  7. Liz says:

Thank you for continuing to post! Having this bit of routine still part of the day has been very helpful.

  8. Rachel says:

Thank you so much for continuing to blog during this crazy time. I am in awe of those who can continue to create content during this stressful time. My favorite blogs, podcasts, and tv shows are helping to keep a sense of normalcy. And a newfound addiction to Below Deck and other mindless tv shows is helping, too.

  9. KRisten says:

Thank You! I check the site almost everyday and love it! Please keep it coming!

  10. Rachael says:

Keep the content coming! I’m loving it! 🙂 And I just bought the blue eyelet dress that you shared yesterday. Stunning!!

  11. JJJJ says:

Yes please keep blogging. Tips about working form home and what we will wear in summer are wonderful to read and do help with stress.

  12. Cait says:

Thank you for keeping the blog up during the pandemic! We need as much levity, community, and distraction as possible. Refreshing the news 200 times a day isn’t going to change the state of things, and can only make us all more worried. Having places like this where people acknowledge the reality of what’s happening but seek to help each other make it more bearable will be what gets many of us through this terrible time with our sanity in tact.

  13. Debbie says:

Thank you so much for what you do. In times of heaviness, it’s so important to have moments of levity. Your blog gives me a much needed break in my day dealing with the professional and personal challenges of being a remote worker who is also trying to manage e-learning for my little guy. We can’t ignore the importance of self care during this time — and your blog gives me a little dose of self care every day.

  14. Liz says:

Thanks for keeping up the content here! This is my favorite way to decompress when I need a breather from everything that’s going on. Thank you for continuing to post!

  15. amy says:

Echoing all of the comments above. Thank you, Abra, for continuing to create content to keep us connected and engaged.

  16. Sarah says:

I’d actually like to see the capsule collection. Thank you.

  17. A says:

Thank you for keeping posts regular! It’s something to look forward to in the uncertain time!

  18. K says:

Thank you for continuing to post here and on Insta! It’s been such a bright spot in these long days. Be well!

  19. Sara says:

Please don’t stop blogging. We need you!

  20. MM says:

Echoing everyone else here – thank you so much for continuing to post! Reading your blog is always a bright spot in my day, but even more so now.

  21. Ellie says:

Joining the chorus of people thanking you for the normalcy and for acknowledging the crisis! It really helps this feel less lonely.

  22. ral says:

Thank you for continuing! I look forward to your daily posts b/c it’s so great to see your thoughts and humor come through.

  23. RR says:

I love this little niche of the internet. Thank you so much for your content.

  24. RJ says:

Thank you for continuing to post! With so much uncertainty in the world right now, your blog is comforting and familiar and bringing joy to those of us who need it.

  25. Jen says:

Grateful for you and this blog — keep it going if you are inspired and its ok if you need a break too.

    xoxo

  26. Madeline Vied says:

Yay! Please keep blogging! Yours is my favorite blog!

  27. AB says:

Love your blog and have been a reader for 8 years. Please keep doing what you’re doing! Let us know if you would like reader Qs or anything.

  28. Christin says:

Encouraging the regular scheduled programming. It has been nice to have some normalcy here and appreciate the community you have built. I still need to looks professional on all the Skype calls and a spring capsule would accomplish this 🙂

    Thank you!

  29. LynnS says:

Honestly, I love that you’re still blogging now. Fashion, cocktails, style, etc… are a great distraction from current events from me. And distractions are what give me the strength to keep going.

  30. Sarah says:

I have read and enjoyed your blog for year. I am eternally grateful that you are providing a much needed small escape from the current situation.

  31. SC says:

Thanks for all you do for the blog and your readers! If it comes to that, I would be happy to donate for expenses like site hosting. Be well, AB!

  32. Katie says:

I am always so glad when I see that you have new content up. Thank you for continuing to post! It is so appreciated.

  33. Lost says:

Thank you! For me, work is just as busy as ever and it is so much more challenging from home. I feel like the days never end. Happy to have some fresh blog posts for a mental break.

  34. sbe says:

I love this. Thank you for being an oasis when we’re all spinning from reading the news and updates around the clock.

  35. Elle says:

Please keep blogging! I love your posts and they provide a nice break during the work day. I may not be doing tons of shopping now but I love saving links for later and having something to look forward to.

  36. LAURA says:

I cannot tell you how much I’ve appreciated your posts over the last few days.
You have done such a spectacular job of balancing posts that take our minds of what is going on right now, which also acknowledging and creating a space for us to acknowledge, how unnerving this all is. I am so grateful.

  37. Bre says:

Thank you thank you! Please keep going. A corner of normalcy is so necessary to managing stress.

  38. Katie Kibbe says:

Now more than ever I need your insight and wisdom to cut to the chase and point me in the right direction when it comes to fashion choices. Yes they will change, but we have to fight the frump!

  39. Tara says:

You continuing to blog in this weird, scary, unprecedented time is a necessity that’s keeping your followers and you sane/feeling normal! Also, I just ordered a ton of wfh essentials based on your recommendations to make me feel like I’m actually “at work” while trying to juggle educating my two children, quashing my anxiety, and still maintaining a full time job from home. So thank you. And please keep going!

  40. Kim says:

Thank you so much for continuing to blog! This is the perfect opportunity to catch up with what’s new in fashion and the business world, to create our capsule wardrobes, and to plan out spring purchases. Life WILL go on and I depend on you to help me keep my finger on the pulse, so to speak. I am a long time follower and your blog is the first one I read every night.

  41. Shanghai says:

Thank you for posting. You do a great job balancing all the different priorities we have these days. And you have the self awareness and experience to get the balance right. I’ll be reading! Do what feels right to you.

  42. Jo says:

I appreciate that you are still posting – if you went silent, I for one would be worried you’d gotten seriously ill! That said, I also really appreciate that you do regularly mention the pandemic. I find blogs/influencers who don’t mention it at all to be very off-putting and tone-deaf (and so have stopped reading them), plus I appreciate the solidarity, that we are all in it together to try to #flattenthecurve etc. even while having some levity.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
