Ask the Edit: A Gold Necklace

Feb 21, 2020

You know that I love a beautiful piece of jewelry.  But today’s reader question comes from someone who wants to find a certain look for less.   Let’s go shopping.

Hi Abra,
Long time reader. Query for you: I’m on the hunt for a new necklace. I’d like a gold link/chain necklace. I love this Julie Vos necklace, but $500 is a bit too rich for my blood. In searching, I’ve been able to find expensive or really cheap. Hoping to find something in the middle, perhaps the $200 range. Any ideas?
Thank you! -Diana

Chain necklaces have really come back into style.   And you are correct, they seem to be either very expensive or have the precarious look of a piece of jewelry that will break after one wear.

This is the necklace you are trying to match, and it is gorgeous.  But at $495, not inexpensive.

This Jenny Bird necklace isn’t technically a link necklace, but I thought it had the same level of interest as the inspiration piece.  I own one of her necklaces, and they are well-made and very stylish.

This Kenneth Jay Lane necklace was probably the closest in style and price at $150.  KJL jewelry has that classic look for less, and is usually my first stop when I’m looking for something Diane Lockhart might wear.

He has a large collar necklace where some of the links are lucite, and this very, very cool hinged collar necklace.

This link necklace is made for Soko by artisans in Kenya.  It has a slightly more modern feel than the inspiration piece, but I like the variation in style.  At under-$90, it’s a well-made piece for a decent price.

If you want bigger, rounder links like the inspiration photo, Soko also has a cool necklace in that style.

I found several similar pieces in the $50-$75 range.  This Shelly Segal necklace among them.  J.Crew has a tortoise link necklace that’s very chic.

This necklace was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this post. I bought mine a couple of years ago from J. Crew. It is substantial. Poshmark is a good source for this necklace.

I find eBay is a good place to look for this sort of costume jewellery.

Or any jewellery really. There are artisans who.don’t make to commercial scale selling direct.

I know that wasn’t the intent of the question asker, but I wish this trend was a bit… daintier. I feel like all of these would really overwhelm me and my neck. I will keep looking for a scaled down version!

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
