Happy Hour: For Damp January

Jan 17, 2020

I crossed the halfway mark on Dry January yesterday.  Kyle, however, is doing Damp January.  Instead of full sobriety, Damp January involves cutting back on alcohol consumption.

There are several ways to do Damp January: 1) drink only beer or wine for the month, 2) have only one or two drinks when you would usually have more, 3) limit your drinking to a single location.  A friend is also doing Damp January and only having a single glass of wine when out with friends.

Kyle and I had this Confidencial wine a few weeks ago at a cooking class, and we loved it.  (A minor miracle since I don’t usually drink wine and he has very specific tastes.)  The wine is like a dry cabernet sauvignon, but with a lot of fruit.  And, like most Portugese wines, it costs under-$15 a bottle.

The cooking class was date night for Kyle and I, so I wanted to look nice, but we were going to be cooking, so not too nice.  A ponte shirt dress seemed like the perfect option.  This Ellen Ottoman Dress from Boden is a great option.  It comes in several great colors and has pockets, which is always nice for a relaxed work dress.

Boden has a lot of great relaxed dresses for business casual offices or Casual Fridays.  I also really like this Rachel shirt dress.

The Boden sale section is also not to be missed.  There are always lots of items, some at very deep discounts.  I use them to fill gaps in my wardrobe when I’m gaining/losing weight, have a trip, or just want something new to get through the rest of a season.  There are always a lot of great dresses on clearance.  They have the Ellen dress above in some discontinued colors at half price.

Plus-size?  This Candice shift dress and this Talbot’s knit shift are both nice options.

I have been really loving the picks this week! How is Boden’s sizing? I’m usually between two dress sizes and wonder if I should go up or down.

Love the idea of “damp” January. I’m doing dry January and while I feel muchhh better (sleep? awesome. energy? great.) sometimes I just want a glass of wine!

I love this idea and appreciate you sharing it. I started strong on dry January then ended up at a work event where I had a glass of wine, which made me feel like I “failed” and led to a bunch of guilt. Damp January is so much more attainable for me – it re-frames that instead of having two glasses of wine at the work event, I only had one, so that was a success instead of a failure.

  4. Maia says:

I’m doing dry January as well but have thought about wine much more than I thought I would. I swear I could smell it coming from my neighbor’s apartment the other night. I work full-time and just started grad school so I’m determined to power through, but I can wait till Feb 1st!

Echoing the sentiments on “Damp January.” I’ve been trying to just drink socially, holidays were a bit much when it seemed like every night there was a social engagement.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
