Monday Outfit: Work from Home Attire

Jan 6, 2020

With 2020 fully upon us, I’m working from home full-time until the primaries are over.  Many days, my schedule requires me to jump on a conference call or run errands (printer, sign drop-off, etc.).  So I need to bridge a gap — casual enough for home, but with the ability to dress up a bit for a quick hello.

This outfit from Fashion Jackson is a nice bridge.  I wear the sweatshirt at home, which I can cover with a nice coat or swap out for a real sweater if needed. And the Rothy’s are comfortable enough to wear at home, nice enough to wear outside of it.

Jeans. Levi’s Ripped Straight Leg Raw Hem Jeans.  I like the ripped knee and the raw hem on these under-$80 jeans.  They’re very casual and cool, but a step up from leggings.  If you prefer something in full-length, these AG Step Hem jeans are great (and discount-priced!).  Plus-size ladies should try these Old Navy jeans.

Sweatshirt. H&M Collar Sweatshirt. I chose this sweatshirt because I love the look of a funnel-neck.  And, for under-$20, a great addition to your casual wardrobe.  H&M also makes a simple crewneck.

Want to jazz it up?  Comme des Garcons makes a sweatshirt with their signature heart logo.

If I have a coffee meeting or a lunch, I swap out the sweatshirt for a sweater.  Lou & Grey has a fabulous selection of sweaters, including this Fringemarl sweater and this Fuzzy Chenille sweater.

T-Shirt. BR Luxespun Curved Hem T-Shirt. I love a curved hem tee.  They’re great for layering under sweaters and sweatshirts when you want just a bit of the tee to show.  It comes in several colors, including a basic black and white stripe.

Looking for a v-neck?  This Isaac Mizrahi top is for you.  Plus-size?  This ASOS Curve short-sleeve tee is nice.

Coat. Ted Baker Gwyneth Wrap Coat.  Why the nice coat?  If I need to pop-in to pick up a check or drop-off a sign, I can just cinch up my coat and hide my sweatshirt and tee.  This green wrap coat is fabulous.  For a less-expensive green option, I like this olive Halogen coat.

Looking for a trench?  My heart melts for this burgundy London Fog trench.  It’s perfect for fall and mild winters.

Earrings. Talbot’s Two-Tone Hoops.  How great are these earrings?  Total stunners.  The mix of metals makes this a versatile, impactful piece.

Sunglasses. Retro Oversized Square Sunglasses. Every blogger is touting these very affordable sunglasses from Amazon.  They’re fab.  I loved my black pair so much that I picked up a tortoise pair.

Bag. Antik Kraft Faux Leather Tote.  This Nordstrom tote is the epitome of casual chic.  The shape is just a bit more interesting than the traditional tote.  And the best part?  It’s under-$60.  The bag also comes in mauve and cognac.  And the Antik Kraft label makes a lot of cool handbag styles, all for under-$100.

Shoes. Rothy’s Honeycomb Loafers.  Gucci loafers don’t really fit my lifestyle, so I swapped them out for a comfortable loafer.  If you prefer leather, these Birdies flats get rave reviews for comfort. (I haven’t tried them yet, but they’re on my list.)

If you work from home, what do you like to wear?  I try really hard not to fall into the daily athleisure trap, but it’s tough.  So I’m always looking for new ideas.

I’m always looking for weekend looks that do exactly what you are saying: Keep me comfortable at home but able to bump in to neighbors or go to the park without feeling awkward and exposed.

I love Athleta’s line of Sculptek Skinny Jeans for weekends. They really are stretchy enough that I can do house or yardwork comfortably, run and jump around at the playground with my daughter AND I don’t worry about messing up my good jeans that I save for work. I also love that they are accommodating enough for long underwear because I am a lightweight when it comes to cold.

I’m still on the hunt for the perfect weekend sweatshirt though, I like the subtle funnel on the one you shared, but J Crew is having a great sale on sale and I’m going to try their Shrunken Hoodie just because I like having a hood when it’s cold.

I love, love, love my Birdies. After several months of researching and reading a zillion Rothy’s reviews I ordered a pair, and they were not for me. I don’t wear wide size shoes, but the Rothy’s were so narrow I almost couldn’t even put them on, despite sizing up one whole size. I tried Birdies instead, and couldn’t be happier. While they aren’t washable, the slipper insoles are absolutely incredible. I can’t wait to buy more colors, and try the new leather styles! Also, this whole outfit makes me wish I could wear jeans to work.

I work from home one day a week. In the winter I either wear jeans or leggings and a heavy too casual for the office sweater. In the summer I wear shorts (maternity (not pregnant) with inset side panels because that’s the only way for me to avoid muffin top and still fit my flat rear) or leggings and a loose fitting tee. Caveat that I typically do not leave the house on WFH days, have a sticky-fingered toddler who is around most of the day (with separate care of course, but I still see her) and do not have video calls.

    • Caitlin says:

I am very curious about these maternity shorts! What brand did you buy? Like many, I’m just… sitting for most of my work day, and I feel like sometimes jeans are too uncomfortable and stiff for long periods of sitting, but I need not wear leggings 24/7.

I’ve worked from home for decades. The solution is a black jacket. No one notices anything else you’re wearing. They just register the jacket shoulders and take you seriously.

    Has anyone tried Allbirds flats?

Here’s a Rothy’s code, if anyone needs one:

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
