Monday Outfit: Fall for Casual Friday

Dec 2, 2019

I’m all about easy casual Friday attire.  By the end of the week, I have no energy to think about my wardrobe.   All I want is a chic outfit, a can of dry shampoo, and the promise of Happy Hour.  And this outfit will get me from my morning London Fog to my evening dirty martini in style.

This outfit popped up on my Pinterest page, and it just felt like the perfect mix of casual and chic.  The light layers, the jewelry accents. and the mix of extra details feels very fresh.  So let’s dissect it.

Shirt. This stand collar shirt from & Other Stories is a lovely piece for work or weekend.  It’s the blouse that works under a blazer, a cardigan, or a crewneck sweater with equal ease.  I also adore the delicate lace trim on the collar.

I also love Twist Front shirt from Nic + Zoe that will be very flattering if you’d like to smooth out you mid-section.  Plus-size?  Try this Eileen Fisher blouse.

Sweater. J.Crew’s Juliette Collarless Sweater-Blazer burst onto the scene thanks to Meghan Markle.  I ordered it thinking it might be nice for work as a blazer alternative, and I was right.   It looks amazing over a sheath dress, a pencil skirt and blazer, or jeans and a top.  It’s available from XXs to 3X.

Jeans. Madewell is making an interesting line of denim called Insuluxe that is warmer than their traditional denim.  These 10″ High Rise Skinny Jeans are a little bit stretchy to give a more flattering, comfortable fit.  This style comes in petite and tall.  And they’re 30% off with an extra 10% off for Cyber Monday.

Scarf. This BP. Leopard Scarf is a great piece.  I like the black trim running through it to break up the print.  It’s a little bit glamorous and fun.  I also loved this grey Look By M scarf; it’s a great mix camel and charcoal.

Bag. I swapped out the brown tassel bucket bag in the photo for a modern convertible black backpack.  This bag from ALLSAINTS is the best one that I’ve ever seen because it’s useful and stylish.

Boots. These Seychelles Offstage Ankle boots are a good facsimile of the photo.  However, if I were wearing this outfit, I would wear my go-to Banana Republic cognac ankle boots.  They’re my favorite thing in my closet right now.

Jewelry. I didn’t put any jewelry in the collage because I was pressed for time over the holiday, but I wanted to share some pieces that are close to what is in the photo.  This double-horn necklace in 14k gold (or its cheaper cousin) is a nice piece.  For the cuff,  I like this one from Kenneth Jay Lane or this one from Soko, a line handcrafted by artisans in Kenya.

I bought the BR ankle boots and have been stumped with how to wear them with skinny jeans. My jeans bunch up at the tops if I leave them, don’t look right tucked in, and I’m not confident enough in current trends to roll the cuffs. Do I just need to find ankle jeans like the ones in the picture?

Seconding the recommendation for the Juliette Sweater Blazer! It’s great with everything from jeans to a sheath dress and warm enough for the office, but also for commuting on a brisk fall morning in DC (though maybe not as well-suited for outdoor wear during the fall you’ve been having in inland Washington state and Montana).

The Beauty Edit: Neck Creams

Nora Ephron was right: I feel bad about my neck. As I move through my forties, the creases have turned into chasms. The skin sags like a pair of sweatpants with aging elastic. It’s not great. But it’s just a natural part of getting older. Over the past year, it feels like I’ve tried every […]
