Happy Hour: Elderflower, a Spirit for Everyone

Oct 18, 2019

When I first moved to D.C., I took a job in a local restaurant kitchen.  The owner’s sister was our head bartender, and she was the first person to introduce me to St. Germain elderflower liqueur.  I loved the slightly sweet herbal flavor.  Ordering champagne with elderflower, I felt so impossibly grown up. (Or at least as grown-up as one can feel at 22.)

This Elderflower Ginger Fizz comes to us from Country Living magazine.  It has just a handful of ingredients — St. Germain, champagne, ginger syrup, lemon juice and maraschino cherries.  It’s a simple pour and shake cocktail.

For the ginger syrup, you can make your own or you can buy it.  Making your own ginger syrup isn’t difficult, and you can use to sweeten tea or to make your own ginger ale.  This Pratt Standard syrup is a nice option, it isn’t too sweet.

This Banana Republic dress is the perfect fall frock.  The material is primarily cotton and nylon with a bit of wool.  It’s impossibly soft, very comfortable, and a nice piece for casual Friday, weekend wear, or even a relaxed dinner date.   It also comes in petite and tall.

I own the ivory, but it also comes in black, olive, and pink.  I’ve worn it twice already, and it’s going to be a favorite piece (esp. when paired with these BR boots).  If you need a less expensive version, this NY & Co. dress is a nice option.

Not in love with the turtleneck?   This crewneck ribbed sweater dress is pretty fabulous.  I love the emerald green color.

Plus-size?  This Land’s End dress and BP. dress are worth a look.

How many turtleneck sweater dresses are too many? Asking for a friend…

But seriously. They’re such easy pieces, are so versatile for fall/winter, and I feel instantly put together when I wear them. (I mean, “my friend” does.)

    LOVE St. Germaine.

A more price-point friendly elderflower liqueur found at many shops is La Fleur. Same flavor if you’re mixing it, about 1/3 price.

My favorite with this is the French Gimlet. No gin for you, but for others it is always a hit.

Love the cocktail, love the dress, love the boots. Thanks for a great Friday post.

Do tell more about this time of your life! I’ve been envious of your sophisticated cocktails – i can pretty much only open a bottle of wine,

It’s a fun way to spend a Friday night. Just invite a friend or two, have them bring an ingredient and make a couple of drinks. Cocktail shakers are so cheap now on Amazon, it’s a pretty easy thing to learn.

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

The Range: Spring Blouses for Work (or Zoom)

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.
