Three Ways: A Black Blazer

Oct 16, 2019

It’s been a while since we’ve done a Three Ways post.  So let’s start with an easy one: a black blazer.  And this morning’s Mural one-button blazer is the perfect choice for work and weekend.

For Weekend. 24S Majestic V Neck Tee // Articles of Society Jeggings // lulu dk Small Tag Pendant // TMRW Studio Carl Crossbody // Sam Edelman Rodney Leopard Flat

This is a simple outfit for brunch or a casual dinner with friends.  The distressed jeans are an affordable jegging from Nordstrom.   If you prefer a wider leg opening, try these straight-leg Lucky Brand jeans.  If you’re plus-size, try these NYDJ jeans.

I like the small chain bag from TMRW.  It comes with both the chain strap and a leather strap, so it’s both a day and evening bag. I also like this Everlane Boss Bag (that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about since I first saw it; it’s that good).

To finish out the look, I added a sleek leopard flat.  Prefer a bit more comfort in your Saturday shoe?  Try these calf-hair moccasins.  And if you want to jazz it up, I recommend a killer lipstick, like this one in Amazing Amal.

For Work. Rebecca Taylor Tie-Neck Top // Iris & Ink Button-Embellished Skirt // QVC Pearl Stud Earring // Anna Beck Hammered Ring // Via Spiga Cassie Tall Boot // Spanx Blackout Tights

This outfit is a classic work look with stylish details.  The skirt has a simple cut with button accents and an asymmetric slit to give it a bit of oomph.  At under-$90, this skirt would make a fun addition to any wardrobe.  It’s a basic with a twist.

A white or ivory blouse with contrast piping is a versatile addition to your work basics.  This one is a bit on the spendy side, so try this WHBM blouse or this plus-size Eloquii blouse.

A good classic boot is tough to find. These Via Spiga boots are the most stylish, professional tall boot that I’ve seen in years.  With a 2.5″ heel, they’re a knee-high boot that’s still work appropriate, especially when paired with an opaque black tight.

I kept the jewelry simple.  The pearl earrings have a classic look.  And the Anna Beck hammered ring is probably my favorite purchase of the year.  It’s elegant, but not fussy.  You can wear it with anything.

For Work. Halogen V-Neck Top // H&M Straight Leg Pants // Kendra Scott Black Hoops // DKNY Alexa Satchel // Sam Edelman Rodney Flat

Colored pants are one of my favorite looks for any season.  These trousers from H&M come in pale blue and a lovely burgundy, and come in a heavy weight that makes them perfect for fall.  They come from H&M’s premium collection; the retailer claims they’re made with higher quality fabrics and better construction that its standard pieces.

The black blouse and black blazer is an easy combination to pair with colored trousers.  It’s a bit more streamlined than a white blouse with a black blazer.  If black-on-black isn’t your preference, navy on navy works too.

To accessorize, I picked a hoop earring with a little something extra.  I also like these charming Freida Rothman black-pave studs.    And I adore this ladylike DKNY bag.

I finished the look with a pair of pale blue snakeskin flats.  Why blue?  I like a consistent color from the waist down when wearing trousers; it lengthens the leg and makes the whole look more flattering.  These Frye flats are also a nice option, as are these Aquatalia pumps in dusty blue.

Similarly excited about the return of 3 ways! I know it’s a lot of work-but it is one of my favorite posts. I will say that the 3 outfits in one photo had me squinting a bit to see the details (I guess I have aged since I first started reading your 3-ways posts)! Is it possible to make the image bigger? Or do 3 separate collages (one per outfit)?

    • Maria says:

Agree! These type of posts are the best.

I’m loving the first and third outfits – for some reason the middle one isnt working for me. I think wearing the black blazer and skirt together might look like I’m trying to make a suit, when it’s not really a suit?

    • Belle says:

As long as the fabrics are the same weight and same black you can get away with it. Admittedly, I haven’t seen the skirt in person, so I don’t know that for sure.

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.

The Find: My Best Workout Shorts

For eight years, I have worn the same workout shorts. Every year, an influencer tries to sell me new shorts. I order them. I try them on. They pale in comparison to the shorts I already own. I return them.
