Classics Week: A Sheath Dress

Oct 15, 2019

Frenetic mornings are the worst.  You’re standing in front of your closet, staring into the abyss, unsure of what to wear, but in need of something.right.now or else you’ll be late.  In those moments, I often reach for a simple sheath dress.

This Nordstrom Signature Sheath Dress is a steal.  I love the split-neck style and the elegant cut.  It is available in sizes 0-18, in your choice of black and navy.  Fabulous.

Need sleeves?  Trina Turk Scotch Sheath Dress has a similar price and neckline with an elbow length sleeve.  It’s a great item as well.

Plus-size ladies should look at this Calvin Klein paneled dress with a notched neckline.  Petite ladies should give this Calvin Klein v-neck dress a look.

    Amazing dress!

I just bought the Trina Turk – looking forward to it!

SLEEVES! Give me all the sleeved dresses for a business casual plus office! <3

  4. Lauren says:

For sheaths that don’t have sleeves, how do you top them? Some blogs consider that a faux pas. That anything you put over them will lead to throwing the style off or creating a frumpy silhouette. any suggestions for winterizing my sheaths? I have classic colors like navy, green, and maroon.

Depending on the neckline of the dress, I like wearing a white button down underneath. That way, the lines of the dress are not obstructed by a cardigan or blazer and you’re still warm.

Suggested options for layering under a sheath dress, in no particular order:
      1. Button-down
      2. Button-down-style bodysuit (smoother than a shirt)
      3. Depending on the dress’s neckline, Spanx arm tights (which add sleeves and stop at the bra line and won’t ride up). https://www.spanx.com/clothing/arm-tights-collection

And over the dress, depending on the cut and your style:
      4. Blazer
      5. Sweater/cardigan
      6. ‘Topper’ jacket, usually long-line

I love my Trina Turk Scotch Sheath Dress. Seeing that it’s available again… I might just have to buy it in red too.

I just received this dress and it’s amazing. What kind of blazer do you wear with yours? I was going to wear it to court but my standard blazer didn’t look right against the neckline of this dress. Curious what type of blazer/cardigan you pair with it?

  6. Alli says:

I’m always envious when someone can pull of a sheath dress. I have an hourglass figure, and throughout my (varied) weight fluctuations, this is a style that just doesn’t work for me (and many others with this body type). Too big in the waist, too tight in the hips and/or across the rear. The worst was when ponte became popular, because now sheaths hug every curve. Fine for the club, not for the office or professional environment.

    • RT says:

Amen! Right there with you. I hate when a cute dress catches my eye and then realize it just won’t work with my shape.

    • Belle says:

Have you tried sizing up and tailoring it? I have hips that are 2 (sometimes 3) sizes larger than my bust and waist, so I end up buying larger sized dresses and having them taken in so they don’t look body con on me. If it’s not worth it, I get that, but it might be something to try.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
