Monday Outfit: Layered Up for Travel

Oct 7, 2019

The perfect fall travel outfit has several components. First, layers to prepare you for indoors, chilly planes, and cold weather.  Second, it must be comfortable.  And third, it should be comprised of neutral basics that you can pair with other items in your suitcase.

Today’s inspiration outfit from Fashion Jackson checks all of those boxes.  It blends black and camel pieces to create an outfit that’s perfect for travel.

Turtleneck. I love a stripe turtleneck for fall, and this Banana Republic turtleneck is a great one (esp. for under-$25).  I also like J.Crew’s tissue turtleneck (also in plus-size).  Both are the perfect piece to throw on on a Saturday.

Jeans. A ripped hem adds a surprising amount of edge to a simple pair of jeans.  AG’s legging ankle jeans are my favorite pair.  If you want something with more edge, these Topshop jeans has ripped knees and a sleek style.  Plus-size?  I couldn’t find a pair with a raw hem, but these Wit & Wisdom jeans come highly recommended.

Coat. A classic grey coat is this season’s must-have topper.  It’s a versatile neutral that still has some lightness to it.  This coat is from Harris Wharf and has a wonderful timeless style to it.  For something under-$200, try this Fifth Label coat or this Marks and Spencer coat.

Pro-tip for buying a coat: If you find a great coat, like this J.Crew topper, but the buttons are ruining the look, swap them out.  You can buy buttons at sewing stores or on Etsy.  For the J.Crew coat, I would swap out the pale tortoise buttons for gold or black ones.

Jewelry. I bought this Anna Beck Hammered Cigar Band a few weeks ago, and it was worth every penny.  It has a timeless style that I will be able to wear for years.  If you’re looking for a cheaper hammered band, this Kendra Scott set gives a similar look.

I chose this simple Michael Kors watch because I like that it lays flat on the wrist.  Personally, I prefer a leather band to metal, so MK’s Pyper Watch is more my speed.

Accessories.  I love a voluminous scarf.  They feel so cozy and dramatic.  This BR fringe scarf has a medium volume and a clean look.  Want a bigger, oversize scarf?  Go luxurious with this White + Warren option, or keep it on budget with this ASOS scarf.

The bag I chose was a sleek satchel from Nine West.  It has a small top handle and a generous shoulder strap.  The metal accents on the bag are really chic.  And at $99, this is a bag that won’t break the bank.

Modcloth has the boot that you need for fall.  The Best Behavior Boot has a three-inch block heel keeps them comfortable while giving you a bit of height.  This is a great boot for the price.

I adore this outfit.  The separates could be reworn in several outfits, and the bag would be good for work or travel.  Frankly, I could make this whole outfit out of pieces that I already have in my closet, and there’s nothing better than that.

This is basically what I wore on my flight this morning and then to work today, and I love it!

I also prefer the look of a leather watch strap (vs metal) but have gotten frustrated with how near impossible it has been to replace worn straps after a couple of years. This was something my father used to do easily at the local leather store back home, but here in DC I have had major challenges finding any quality leather watch strap replacements. Has anyone found a good supplier to convince me not to go full metal?

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
