Happy Hour: An End-of-Summer Fizz

Sep 20, 2019

While it’s chilly here in the Upper Left, I know it’s still quite warm in many places.  So the thought of a hot cocktail probably makes several of you want to turn up the air conditioning. But never fear, there will be no hot cocktails today, because not even I am ready for spicy ciders.

Today, I wanted to share a cocktail that is equal parts summer and fall.  This Fig and Lemon Fizz mixes the brightness of lemon with the earthy flavor or figs and the herbal notes of rosemary to create a truly unique cocktail.

This Fizz is a bit more work than the cocktails that I typically post.  To spread the cost around, invite your friends over on a Friday and ask each friend to bring a single ingredient and something to snack on.  It’s certainly cheaper and more relaxing than heading to the bar.  Think of it as a Happy Hour potluck.

Every month, Amazon gifts me an item from their in-house brands for being an Amazon affiliate.  Not everything they give us to try is a winner, but sometimes, the product is truly fabulous.  Which is why I need to talk about these leggings.

The Ponte Knit Leggings from Daily Ritual can be had for the price of two happy hour cocktails and are worth every damn penny and then some.

They are a mid-to-heavy weight ponte material that feels so soft on your skin.  They’re not workout leggings, they’re living life leggings.  They have a mid-rise waistband and come in short, regular, long, and extra long lengths.  (Tall ladies, rejoice!)   They also come in plus-sizes.

The leggings come in several colors and textures.   I own the olive, and they’re lovely.  A really unexpected neutral.  I wear them with the Free People sweaters that I rave about.   (Because they’re amazing.)  If you can’t find your size, try Poshmark.  I damaged my black one on a trip and replaced it on the resale site.

I can also personally vouch for these leggings. THEY ARE AMAZINGLY SOFT! They also wear well after washing.

I wish amazon had the shoes the model is wearing listed in the related items!

Those knit leggings are CUTE, but I do wish they had a fly so I could more easily pretend they’re real slacks.

Hi, Abra! How do these leggings compare to the Zella leggings that you have previously recommended? Thanks so much for your wonderful blog!

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
