Monday Outfit: All Burgundy All the Time

Sep 9, 2019

Wearing all black is easy.  Wearing a monochromatic outfit in another color is more difficult.  Today, I’m recreating a look that uses burgundy as a neutral to create a work outfit with real impact.

Dorothy Perkins Burgundy Wrap Coat ($119) // Halogen Faux Wrap Blouse ($42) // Halogen Ponte Pencil Skirt ($59) // Whitney Rose Gold Watch ($250) // Lancaster Paris Satchel ($179) // Talbot’s Erica Tortoise Heels ($149)

This outfit comes to us from Corporate Catwalk.  Olivia mixes burgundy pieces to create a bold fall work ensemble.

While it’s difficult to find burgundy shades that pair exactly, if you can find pieces made by the same retailer, you can match the colors you need.  For this outfit, I chose a top and skirt from Halogen.  They may not look like they match in the college, but in the retailers photos, they’re nearly identical colors.

Olivia choose pants and a sweater, but a skirt and blouse is a bit more my speed.  Prefer pants?  Try these Halogen paper bag style pants or these Theory flare trousers.  Pair the Theory trousers with this discounted Theory sweater from the Rack for the perfect  match.

Love the coat?  This Dorothy Perkins jacket is a nice, affordable option.  This Ralph Lauren coat has a classic look.  I also like the wrist details on this Cole Haan trench coat.  Plus-size?  Try this Andrew Marc coat or this London Fog trench.

For the accessories, burgundy hues bring out the warmth in the rose gold watch.   If you’re looking for a pair of earrings, don’t miss these fabulous Kenneth Cole wire hoops.  Prefer studs?  These rose gold knots are superb.

The bag is a fairly simple burgundy satchel.  Burgundy also adds a nice pop of color to neutral outfits, so it’s a great fall bag.  This Urban Originals tote with origami details is still one of my favorite bags.

Lastly, choosing shoes for this outfit is a challenge.  Going all burgundy might feel a bit like a costume, so I opted for these tortoise pumps.  These Talbot’s heels are a great option.  I also like these $50 Dorothy Perkins heels with a wider heel.  Prefer flats?  Kate Spade has a chic pair.

So would you wear an all burgundy outfit, or an outfit entirely made up of a non-neutral color?  Leave your thoughts in the comments.

I was just eyeing the burgundy skirt and matching (work appropriate, I promise) crop top from JCrew this morning! Burgundy on burgundy is SO chic.

I literally just wore an all-burgundy outfit last Friday, which paired Banana Republic top/trousers with leopard-print slip-ons. More generally, non-black single-color outfits are a favorite of mine, as is tonal color-blocking (obviously not matching, but, say, two analogous shades of blue). I’ve done salmon/coral in the summer. Seriously love this.

This reminds me of the style of the Siobhan Roy character in Succession. Could you do a post about her look? It’s my favorite right now.

Favorite color for fall into winter. single tone or pairing with other colors it goes with practically every other hue. .

I have a burgundy pleated skirt and have been searching for a matching burgundy top – preferably in faux leather – so I can do the monochrome look. In the meantime, I just bought a magenta top to match with magenta pants for a very bold head to toe look. I might chicken out once I put it on but I am looking forward to attempting.

Love non-black monotone looks. Didn’t see this post until today, but I’m wearing a burgundy pleated midi skirt, belt, and blouse. Was even complemented on the look on my way into work.

  7. wellfedfred says:

Yes, monotone! I vary the textures – this fall, burgundy suede blazer, silk shirt, wool pants. Also moving around some deep green pieces for another take on mono. Shoes are usually a different color, or multi- colored.

Man, I’m not sure I could pull this off without looking like the various Green/Pink/Purple Old Ladies that get cute features on Facebook video or whatever for being all [color] all the time. Maybe the tortoise heels keep it from reaching that?

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
