Ask the Edit: Affordable Fall Coats

Sep 9, 2019

With chillier weather on the horizon, it’s time to start thinking about coats.  Stylish outerwear is a great way to jazz up your winter wardrobe, but where do you find affordable fall gear?

Hi Abra:

I spend a lot of time outside with my students and cute coats are one of the few perks.  Can you help see find a few fall coats that won’t split my paycheck in two?  I’m in Virginia, so I don’t need parkas.

Thanks for the help. Ana

I’m not a big fan of cold weather, so fall fashion is one of the few things that makes the end of summer bearable.  Here are three retailers who stock stylish outerwear that falls in the middle price point.

J.Crew Factory. From rain jackets to wool coats, Factory has you covered.  This Utility Rain Jacket is perfect for mild rainy climates or layered over warmer pieces for colder days.  Their New City Coat comes in a handful of colors and has a great shape to it.   Factory also makes a nice puffer vest.

Daily Ritual by Amazon.  The in-house Amazon fashion brands continue to improve.  Daily Ritual is easily my favorite of their private labels.  This Double-Faced Wool Short Coat has a high-fashion look with the dramatic lapel and mix of camel and grey.  For something simpler, this wool-blend Belted Coat comes in a handful of neutral colors.

Amazon Fashion’s different lines stock many styles of outerwear.  This Lark & Ro Peplum Puffer is the perfect mix of feminine and sporty.  It’s a great alternative to a puffer vest.

Mango. If you want ultra-chic, modern fashions, Mango is the retailer for you.  Their styles run from the low-$100s to the high-$200s, but there are frequent discounts to lower the cost of the pricier pieces.  The current line has all the Olivia Pope vibes.

This Structured Wool Coat has an amazingly sleek look that adds elegance to any outfit.  This sportier Buttoned Wool Coat has a more casual look with a bold funnel collar.

Mango has a line called Violeta that runs sizes 10 to 18.  They label this plus-size, but while it’s a wider range than they traditionally offer, it’s a stretch to call it plus.

If you have a favorite outlet for fall and winter coats, leave it in the comments, especially if you’re in a specialty size range.

Broken record here…to score a great coat for a great price secondhand is the way to go! It takes a bit of time, but you can get a brand out of your price range retail for a really good deal. Case in point, I wanted an olive field jacket for fall, but couldn’t find one I really liked (too boxy, non-neutral green, etc) and they were all over $100 at Madewell or J. Crew. Set up a search on ThredUp for green jackets in those brands and scored exactly what I was looking for — for $35.

This weekend, I got two hours to myself for the first time in months. Really to myself. My child was asleep. My dogs were asleep. Kyle was off playing cards with his friends. My house was clean, and there was nothing else to do but sit in my bed and scroll Instagram. It was glorious. […]
