Best Shops for Last Minute Swimsuits

Aug 7, 2019

It’s August, and if you’re headed to the pool, the lake, or the beach, you might be in the market for a new swimsuit.  But where do you go when the suit you wanted in May sold out, and the stores are already stocking parkas?  Here are my best shops for late season swimsuits at affordable prices.

LOFT: The store where I bought all of the swimsuits for my wedding weekend.  Yes, all.  More accurately, both of these.  Because the bride must have options.

Every summer, LOFT has one of the best swimsuit selections out there.  For a limited time, many of their styles are an additional 50%-off.  And even though there’s a sale going on, almost every piece I looked at had a wide selection of sizes still available.

Including this bandeau cut-out one-piece (the color is fab in person), and this beach paradise halter top and bottom (both pieces are under-$30 total).

Love the beachy, floral print, but need a one-piece?  LOFT has that too.  I also picked up the coordinating kimono swimsuit cover.

Need something more basic?  This black suit in bikini or tankini also caught my eye.

Plus-size ladies, the sale doesn’t have as wide a selection of styles as I had hoped.  But it does have a handful of cute suits, this bright red one being my favorite.

Old Navy is always a good place to pick up a last minute suit.  The product is affordable, well-made (esp. for the price), and you can mix and match tops and bottoms to get a style that is right for you.  And if you leave it in a spa locker room in Tuscon (me), you won’t be heartbroken that you lost a pricey suit.

This wrap front top is one that several of my girlfriends, all with different body types, swear by.  It’s one of those rare pieces that flatters a wide range of figures.  I also liked this textured-stripe one-shoulder top in basic black.  It’s a trendy take on a basic suit.

I also love that Old Navy offers extras like these drawstring board shorts and side-tie skirt for women who want to go to the pool, but prefer to have a little more coverage.  I bought board shorts for stand up paddle boarding, because when I inevitable fall off my board and get soaked, I don’t want to be wearing chino shorts.

The thing I appreciate most about Old Navy is that there suits come in tall and plus-size.  Pregnant or postpartum?  Old Navy stocks maternity suits as well.

ASOS is a bit of a mixed bag in the swimsuit department.  There are nearly 1,000 choices.  But when you scroll through, many of the suits are designed for women far bolder than myself, looking to show off their bodies.  It makes shopping a bit of a hunt, but in amongst those styles, you’ll find a selection of styles in bold colors and fun prints.

The other thing that ASOS has is suits for women with fuller busts, something sorely lacking in the market place.  This hot pink Wolf & Whistle suit is designed for women from D-F cup.  The retailer has a fuller bust section with nearly 150 suits and cover-ups in a range up to size G.  This dotted longline top with underwire is just as cute as it could be.

I also liked this flutter-sleeve suit in orange-coral.  It just says, “Caribbean beach vacation” to me.

ASOS also stocks a wide selection of plus-size suits.  They have a smaller number of petite suits, but I adore this scallop trim one.  The retailer also stocks tall sizes, and maternity suits.  If I were expecting, I would have grabbed this canary yellow suit with the frill bandeau top.

Where do you buy your swimsuits for summer?  Leave other shops you love in the comments.

    Athleta

Amazon for swimsuits! Free returns mean I can try them on at home and not in a cold dressing room. Can’t beat the prices either.

Jenna, can you give me a quick 101 on how you find bathing suits on Amazon? I just went looking and was overwhelmed when it gave me 20,000 options.

  3. Amy says:

Last month I bought a whole new wardrobe of swimsuits from Target because mine were all years old: dried out crispy elastic, stretched out baggy fabric, weird yellowing from sitting unused in a drawer… I ended up keeping 4 tops and 4 bottoms, most of which can be mixed together, for a little over $100.
Not truly last minute, though, since it took four separate packages and nine days before the last piece arrived. (I could have paid extra for fast shipping if I had been in a rush.)

I just got this one after seeing that our hotel in Japan has a pretty incredible pool. It arrived, fits perfectly, fully lined, love it.

Boden has great one piece suits and has tall sizes.

Talbots sale section is great place to look for good deals on swimwear. They actually have a good sale going on now.

  8. Brandi says:

I bought my swimsuit two years ago at Everything But Water. It was an investment at $125, but it is well made and classic and I don’t expect to buy a new one for several years.

  9. Sarah says:

I love Athleta and at the end of the season you can get decent sales. I am a 30DDD/32DD and I need support and bra sized tops. I tried to go for Target and Old navy, but find that ones that are small enough for my narrow shoulders/frame lack in the cup area and feel scandalous on.

Athleta has decent styles and are very comfy. I got a bikini 3 years ago and it is still holding up well. I got a new one this year in a different cut and I am very happy.

Just bought the floral one piece (because #momlife)from Loft! Crossing my fingers it fits

Boden carries really cute long torso swimsuits! Yay!
