Nordstrom Anniversary Pre-Sale Workwear Picks

Jul 12, 2019

It’s the most wonderful day of the year.  (Unless you work in the Nordstrom IT Department.)  So get your Nordstrom cards ready (if you have one), and let’s shop!

This year, I decided to cover workwear picks in a separate post.  Why?  Because the Sale is a great time to refresh your work basics, and it’s easy to get distracted by other items.  And we’re going to start with the one item I look forward to every year: the Hugo Boss business suit.  Or should I say, suits.

That’s right BOSS wearers, the brand has treated us to multiple suits this year.  This emerald-hued micro-check pantsuit caught my eye.  The color is unique, but classic.  And like most BOSS suits, there is also a matching pencil skirt.

Other colors of BOSS (still so excited there are multiple suits) include: A black pinstripe with a modern asymmetrical jacket, a tropical wool basic black, and a charcoal grey with black accent panels.

If you’re in the market for designer suiting, I would also check out this gorgeous pale grey Theory suit.

Halogen also does a business suit or two for the Sale each year.  This is it in a black-and-white plaid, with a single-button jacket.  It comes in plus-size and misses.

I, however, prefer the navy pinstripe jacket with the midi-length pencil skirt.  The suit comes in misses and petite.  It has a bit of an early-90s, Anita Hill vibe that I’m really into.

Blazers.  The Sale also features a selection of work-appropriate blazers.

This single-button Halogen blazer comes in five colors.  It’s also an affordable $86.  And I think the slightly longer cut makes it perfect for professional attire or business casual attire, because it’s relaxed in a very modern way.  It’s also available in petite.

If you’re looking for full business casual, this Caslon knit jacket has a fabulous draped neckline.  It comes in their soft jersey fabric, and you can choose from eight colors.  This jacket would look great with jeans or over a simple dress.

Skirts. The Sale brings us 55 skirts this year.  The majority of them are work appropriate, which I think is a first.  So let’s talk about a couple of my favorites.

The Halogen skirts are usually crowd pleasers, and this midi-length pencil for $36 is no exception.  I also love this midi-length sweater skirt in a bold peacock teal.  It’s a fun color for fall; I’d wear it with a cream turtleneck sweater.

For something more fun, I like this embroidered Halogen circle skirt in a deep navy.  With a sleek blouse and some pumps, this is a very pretty work outfit.  Also in plus-sizes.

Dresses.  Ah, yes, dresses, my favorite thing.  So many lovely styles with 139 work-appropriate dresses, however will I choose?

First, let’s talk about how Tahari just knocked it out of the park with the work dresses.  I mean look at these!

On the left, we have a simple navy sheath with cap sleeves and a side tie for $85 in three colors.  Next to it, we have an emerald dress for $85, also in plus-size.  This cobalt stunner with the inverted notch collar and the belt is next, also $85, also in plus-size.  And last, we have this pretty raspberry dress with the slightly puffed sleeve, again $85.

For under-$400, you could have one heck of a dress wardrobe for all seasons, because these dresses are perfect for year-round wear.

As for the rest of the dresses, there are a lot of truly lovely picks.  So I’ll just share three more that caught my eye.

Eliza J Contrast Hem Dress ($99)

Eliza J Twist Fit and Flare Dress ($92)

Maggy London Navy Dress ($99)

Tops. Last but not least, let’s move on to shirts and blouses.  Tops: the one item of clothing I always feel like own so many of, but still never seem to have as many as I need.

This Vince Camuto top for $52 is one of my favorites from the Sale.  I love the contrast piping.  It will look so chic under a v-neck sweater, cardigan or blazer.

Other layering tops include this lovely Halogen ruffle-neck blouse (a total steal at $39) and this Halogen drape front top.  Both would look wonderful under a business suit.

This long-sleeve Halogen blouse in a silky material also caught my eye.  It comes in eight colors and patterns.  Their knot-front jersey top would also look cute with a wide leg jean for casual Friday.

I hope you enjoyed this year’s Anniversary Sale workwear picks, I’ll put up some other beauty, shoe, and bag choices later.  But I wanted to get the work clothes out of the way since the selection this year was better than previous years.

Dear Belle, It just occurred to me that you might be able to answer questions about a Congresswoman’s work wardrobe. Do you know which brands AOC wears? I am thinking of this white, quilted jacket:

    And this red dress:

    And this black dress:

The two dresses have some really nice seam work on the bodice.

Thanks for all your hard work.

Coming back to say that the white, quilted jacket is shown in slide 2/33 in the first link. Sorry about that.

I picked up that pencil skirt! Such a staple and really sold on the pockets! Someplace to stash my phone is so helpful.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
