The Weekly Edit: The Marble Petri Dish

Feb 28, 2019

I’m sick.  Again.  We’re through the first half of the session, so I should be driving home to see Kyle on the break, but instead I’m chugging Theraflu and antibiotics.  Fantastic.

The Montana State Capitol is just a cesspool of disease.  Because the session is only 90-days, everyone just comes to work sick.  Nothing like having a lobbyist shake your hand and then say, “Oh, you might want to Purell, I have a cold.” ????????‍♀️  Thank you, Patient Zero, I didn’t need to enjoy my well-deserved break.

Ugh.  Here’s what is giving me life while I fight through another case of The Capitol Crud.  (Seriously, it’s so common, they named it.)

These pajamas from Nordstrom Lingerie are life.  I have them in four colors.  They are the perfect thing to put on at the end of a long day.  They’re soft and cozy.  They also hold up well after dozens of washes.

If you prefer a different style, the Moonlight pajamas are a more modern legging and top style.  Nordstrom Rack also has a great selection of affordable pajamas.  This cashmere and silk crewneck pullover is nice enough you could wear it out of the house…not that any of us ever would.

Do you get the Girls’ Night In Newsletter?  If you don’t, you should.

They’re March Book Club pick is this amazingly titled book, The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls.  With a title like that, I don’t think I even need to know what it’s about.  I’m definitely going to read it.

You know the phrase, “Taking candy from a baby,” well I stole my nephew’s lotion.  (He doesn’t have candy yet, because he doesn’t have teeth.)  Kristen Bell, she of Veronica Mars fame, teamed up with Wal-Mart to create an affordable, organic line of baby products called Hello Bello.  And at $6 this plant based lotion is my jam.  I’m sure if you have a little one, they’ll like it too.

Since I’m stuck in bed, I can finally catch up on the documentaries everyone is talking about: Fyre Fraud and Fyre.  I love anything about process, and I love a good heist movie.  So it stands to reason that I should like two documentaries about con-men taking advantage of social media obsessed millennials by selling an exclusive music festival that never happened.

So what are you watching, reading, listening to and loving?  Leave your thoughts in the comments.

That book sounds like the story of my life. It’s probably too late now, but as soon as I start feeling a tickle in my throat, I start taking zinc. My go-to now are these zinc and elderberry lozenges from Whole Foods. It’s supposed to shorten the length and severity of a cold. I could just have a really good immune system, but I haven’t gotten really sick (anything beyond a few days of sore throat or something a good ten hours of sleep can’t fix) in years.

  2. MM says:

Ugh, that sounds terrible! Hope you feel better soon.

I did a double take when I saw those pajamas – they look JUST like a pair I just bought from J. Crew Factory: https://factory.jcrew.com/p/womens-clothing/loungewear/pajamasets/knit-pajama-set/J8638. It’s my first time owning a set of actual pjs (versus old sweatpants and t-shirts) and I’m in love. So soft, so comfortable – highly recommend, and JCF is always running sales!

Enjoy the Fyre Festival documentaries – as a marketing professional in the events business, I consumed everything I could get my hands on about that cluster. Utterly fascinating.

  3. Bo says:

I always take vitamin c when I start to feel sick. I swear it curbs it by a few days.Hope you get better soon!

Lately I’ve gotten into podcasts. My favorite is “Secrets of Wealthy Women” by the Wall Street Journal. I recently started “The Dropout” which is around Elizabeth Holmes and the downfall of Theranos.

    • Jill says:

Ugh, I wish handshaking would end for that reason. Speaking of Theranos, just checked Bad Blood out of the library (digitally). For streaming, loved My Brilliant Friend, Shtisel, Mrs. Maisel.

  4. Kelly says:

Those Fyre documentaries totally pulled me IN. I finally watched American Crime Story season 1 and am on to season two this weekend. Just started On the Come Up, from the author of The Hate U Give, so that’ll probably get finished this weekend.

  5. Cheryl says:

I truly feel for you. Back in the dinosaur days before personal cell phones, there were “phone banks”, a closet room with 4-5 telephone booths connected together for legislator use only. You can picture 100 or 50 people constantly using 4-5 phones in common. Two weeks after Session opened, 80% of people were deathly sick, but as you stated, still coming to work. Legislators, staff, lobbyists working with 104 degree temperatures in public hearings and later General Session work.
At that time, Helena physicians did not readily take ‘new patients,’ and legislative people were “new”. It resulted in lots of $500 ER visits just to treat severe colds. My husband once was so sick, I sent him in with our 2-month old daughter to her pediatrician for her 2-month checkup, just to get him into a physician, ANY physician. Her pediatrician did call a family practice physician friend to get him right in for an exam and badly needed antibiotics.

Ah, the good old days. Chicken soup and Tylenol reign supreme. Love your entry about pajamas. Take a much-needed rest during Transmittal, and best wishes for better health.

  6. Jamie says:

Those Fyre documentaries gave me anxiety. I had dreams about organizing disastrous events for a few days!

  7. Karen says:

The Fyre documentary made me so mad. Great Exuma is a really neat island, but there is NO way anyone who visits the island for more than 15 minutes would think it had the infrastructure in place to handle an influx of thousands of people for a music festival. I feel so bad for the local residents that got used.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
