The Work Edit: Bring on the Spring(ish) Pleats

Feb 11, 2019

Even though there’s almost two-feet of snow in my front yard, it’s time to start thinking about the winter-to-spring transition.  Pairing sweaters with springier pieces is a great way to blend the two seasons together.  Here is a great outfit to get you through until the weather actually warms.

(Please be soon.)

1. Mezzo Huggie Hoops ($52) // 2. Washable Merino Turtleneck ($41) // 3. Polka Dot Pleated Skirt ($72) // 4. Michael Kors Runway Watch ($195) // 5. Loeffler Randall Gia Boots ($695)

This outfit blends a versatile navy turtleneck with a flirty pleated skirt.  Adding the boots pulls the pieces together and keeps the look seasonally appropriate (or just keeps your calves from getting frostbite).  Bring in some simple gold accessories, and you have a classic combination for surviving the nippy transition into spring weather.

One. I love these modern huggie hoops from Baublebar.  Looking for something more affordable, try this pair of Sole Society hoops or these bamboo hoop earrings.

Two. Washable knits are a miracle for those of us without access to reliable, affordable dry cleaning.  Banana Republic has a lot of great options.  I also like this crewneck sweater.  Need a v-neck?  This Bloomingdale’s cashmere sweater is a good option even though it’s not washable.

Three. I LOVE this skirt. It’s the kind of piece people will stop to ask you where you bought it, and no one will believe it was $72.  Looking for a solid navy option? Try this pleated tulle midi-skirt from BR or this inexpensive Shein skirt.  Plus-size? Modcloth has some great options, including this simple pleated skirt.

Four. A simple watch is a great addition to any wardrobe.  This watch is a nice option.  If you prefer something less fancy, this $99 Nixon watch is great.

Five. These cognac boots from Loeffler Randall are gorgeous.  I love the lower block heel for comfort.  Looking for something similar for less?  These Kenneth Cole boots are nice.  Or go with this short pair from INC for something more relaxed.

It looks like an outfit straight out of Rebecca Pearson’s closet. It’s beautiful!

Is there a good rule of thumb for pairing boots with longer skirts? I have a midi-length olive green pleated skirt that I love (a little longer than what the model is wearing in the photo), but every time I try and pair it with boots it looks odd and I end up bailing on the look entirely.

Do your boots have a 2″ or higher heel? I’ve found that my boots that work with midi or maxi skirts look far better if they’re heeled and are on the pointier side.

omg LOVE this look. Just purchased the skirt – thanks!

  4. Michaela says:

Pretty sure the original outfit is from the French brand Sezanne. I love going through their lookbooks for inspiration and appreciate your more affordable picks!

Love the look and ordered the skirt the day of post…true to size, but longer than on model. I am in warmer climate so paired with Navy HH pumps and navy mock sweater, gold jewelry looks great! Thanks for the post !!

The Find: A Versatile Sweater Jacket

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

The Range: Spring Blouses for Work (or Zoom)

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.
