The Weekly Edit: Memorial Day Cometh

May 24, 2018

And so it goes, one minute the snow is melting, and the next, it’s the unofficial start of summer.  Chunky cardigans give way to summer dresses.  Steamy London Fogs are replace by fruity iced teas.  And all the joys of summer lie before you.

Heading to a barbecue this weekend?  One of my summer-potluck favorites is this Greek Orzo Pasta Salad from Kitschen Cat.  It’s light, fresh, and you can pack it full of as many vegetables as you want.  Plus, if you like pasta, orzo is a great way to eat it without the post-pasta coma.

Looking for a #notsaddesklunch?  Add grilled chicken or lamb meatballs and a hint of Trader Joe’s tzatziki.  It’s a super affordable lunch, because you can make a ton of this salad for under-$15.  (Just make sure to buy the Kalamata olives in the deli, and not in the jar.  It’s cheaper.)

And if you’re looking for a great serving bowl, I own a couple of these Melamine serving bowls.  They’re durable, pretty, and at $6, you won’t care if your forget them at a friend’s house.

I’m always in the market for versatile dresses.  Can I wear it to work?  Can I wear it on the weekends?  Can I wear it to drinks?  If I can answer those questions in the affirmative, the dress is probably coming home with me.  Such is the case with this Poplin Tie-Front dress from Anthropologie.

I’ve been loving tie-front dresses in general.  I also bought this cool, striped shirtdress from 1.State.  And I’ve been considering buying this printed one from Whistles; I just love the sleeve detail.  Need something under-$100?  Try this gingham option from Gap or this very chic striped dress from H&M (which I bought immediately after writing this post).  Plus-size? Try this gray one from Calvin Klein that has all kinds of Montauk vibes.

I wouldn’t be shamelessly plugging the group if it wasn’t an awesome group of women.  Recently, a reader (who discussed her bi-polar disorder in one of the post comments) told me that it was the first time in the years since her diagnosis that she shared her condition and everyone reacted in a supportive way.  So if you’re concerned about trolls or mean girls or vitriol, we don’t have any of that.  No politics, no religion, no friends posting ads for multi-level marketing campaigns — it’s what Facebook should be.

I first tried Kopari Coconut Body Glow at a blogger conference in February.  I liked the product.  It was moisturizing, gave my skin a nice shine, smelled terrific, but what did I need shiny, slightly bronzed skin for in February?

Now it’s May, and the second my thoughts turned to swimsuits and summer, I had to have a bottle.  Now, this stuff is not cheap, but it lasts.  You can apply it to your body for a real beachy glow.  You can dab it on your face as a highlighter.  As you can see on Jessoshii’s blog it’s a subtle, shimmery effect.

Not ready to commit $42 to the cause of summer?  Kopari also makes a kit of sample sizes — body glow, coconut melt (which is amazing) and tinted lip gloss — for $28.  I bought it for a beach trip coming up next month.

A few weeks ago, Dave Grohl, of Nirvana/Foo Fighters fame, played a benefit concert in San Francisco.  After his set, he invited his oldest daughter, Harper, on stage to sing the Adele song “When We Were Young.”  Now, I know what your thinking, a 12-year-old is going to sing Adele?  But watch the video.

Also, every child should have a parent who looks at her the way Grohl looks at Harper when she hits the high notes.

I’d love to see a post on how you would style the gingham shirt dress! I like gingham on other people but I feel more farm girl than casual chic when I try to wear it.

A word of warning about the Kopari products: Many of them are coconut oil based. Coconut oil is mildly comedogenic, meaning it can clog pores. So if you’re acne-prone, you’ll want to keep it away from your face. Not trying to bash the brand or coconut oil in general… in fact, I find it’s the best deep conditioning treatment for my hair, as long as I wash it out thoroughly and keep my hair up and off of my skin.

Question about the Kopari product – how much does it “shed?”? I’m totally intrigued but, looking at the bottle, wondering how much sparkle or gold tone I should expect to see on clothing, seats, etc. Thank you! Always love the Weekly Edit.

I’ve notice a little on my clothes if I sweat, but I haven’t noticed anything on my car seats.

OMG that Dave Grohl and his daughter video! She is so sweet. Maybe because I have a baby daughter and am just a mush about this stuff, but I just got teary eyed at my desk watching it! I love how she brightens up and smiles so big when she hits those high notes. And him watching her so proudly! Ugh! Thanks for sharing. It warmed my heart and made me cry at my desk. (I can just tell coworkers I have allergies, right?)

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
