This week on The Escape, we follow Sarah to Morocco, where she visited last May.

Morocco is one of those places that just robs you of your words — there are so many scents, textures, views, and noises. Lonely Planet describes Morocco best when it introduces Fes, describing the city as “an assault on the senses.”

While I’m sure there are plenty of ways to describe Morocco, nothing quite sums it up for me like that. I spent exactly two weeks with two close friends, ending my twenties and beginning my thirties in Morocco. From Marrakesh, we road tripped to the Sahara in Merzouga, and then got lost in the medina of Fes, and sipped tea on rainy afternoons in the mountainous blue city of Chefchaouen. If you find yourself in Morocco, my advice would be to savor every minute and to take your trip slowly. Every stop and every view is absolutely worth it.

Palazzo pants saved me on this trip – and while I opted for the super-cheap Amazon version, the floral wrap set above would set you apart from literally every other photo taken at La Mamounia.

Light, airy blouse — while in the desert, I learned that covering up can actually keep you cooler in an extreme, dry heat (not the case in DC’s humidity). The trumpet top above finds that perfect balance between structure and body, and would be a fun combo with the floral pants while meandering the souqs.  This short sleeve tee is modest enough for a conservative culture, and this flutter-sleeve piece will keep you feeling elegant, even in 110 degree heat.

Zippered Tote — I’ve sworn by the Michael Kors Jet Set totes for the past six years, and mine is still holding up strong. Like any other trip, make sure your purse can zip right up, because pick pockets are not a joke. The Tumi “Just in Case” tote is another tote I keep tucked into my suitcase at all times — it’s large enough to fit a whole Berber wedding blanket in it, but folds into a tiny little pouch.

Platform slides — the pair above would make wandering the winding streets of both Fes and Marrakesh a breeze (and you can find them in even more colors here). These red slides would blend right in with the red and pink buildings throughout Morocco’s desert regions, too. Want something a little more secure? Tom’s flat wedges are comfortable and give your toes a little extra distance from the ground.

A good one-piece is hard to find — am I right? This navy plunge one-piece would be perfect for a lazy dip in your riad’s courtyard pool, and the fabric in this suit feels incredible. Want something a little brighter? This red number provides a surprising amount of support, and is embellished with some great gold accents.

Necessary extras — as always, I never leave my apartment without a good pair of reflective sunnies and some version of a camera to capture every perfect moment. I swear by this little Fuji, but the Polaroid above would make some great instant memories with all of your new friends from the juice stand.

Travel detergent — I take pride in packing light, and living out of a carry-on for even my 14-day trips. My secret weapon? Travel-sized detergent packets. Anytime I have more than one night in a hotel, I’ll hand wash a few pieces in the sink, and hang dry them in the shower.  Game. Changer.
