Item of the Week: Field Jackets

In the early fall, finding the right jacket can be a challenge.  These olive-green field jackets were super trendy three years ago, but unlike many trends, this one had staying power.

This LL Bean Classic Utility Jacket ($89) is a wardrobe essential.  I wear mine with jeans and sweaters, over workout clothes when I walk the dogs, or with a nice blouse and trousers for a casual business look.  The key to choosing a great jacket is to choose one in a mid-hip length with a defined waist.

LL Bean has an incredible selection of styles and weights at affordable prices.  They offer a waxed field jacket, a flannel-lined utility jacket, and a sherpa-lined jacket.  All of these styles also come in petite.  The flannel-lined jacket also comes in plus-sizes.

Need an under-$75 option?  Try this jacket from J.Crew Factory, or this jacket from Modcloth, which also comes in plus-sizes.  For something really affordable, Target has this $30 olive vest.

I just can’t do olive green, but last year I found a field jacket from Madewell (Fleet Jacket) in a lovely dusky blue color. Coordinates with everything in my closet with that outdoorsy fall vibe. It is truly a classic. They don’t seem to carry it in that color this year. https://www.madewell.com/madewell_category/JACKETSANDOUTERWEAR/Jackets/PRDOVR~C3394/C3394.jsp

I have the Women’s Twill Anorak Hooded Jacket from A New Day at Target and love it. It has a drawstring at the waist and I love the hood and detail on the elbows. It’s available in olive green and 3 other colors, including the grey that I got. It’s very lightweight, but I live in southern California, so not an issue for me. I feel it’s worth the $39 I paid – I wear it a lot more than I expected. The dream is Barbour, but I have a hard time justifying the cost in my climate.

I have last year’s version of the LLBean jacket and it is FANTASTIC! I loved it so much I bought the lined version as well. Quality is great and it checks all of the boxes.

The version from Old Navy this fall is also amazing! I’m obsessed with mine. I got it for $24 on sale. https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=437889002&CAWELAID=120299900000078992&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=35201331985&CATCI=aud-316777184773:pla-299186039233&device=c&product_channel=online&Matchtype=&tid=onpl000000&kwid=1&ap=7&lsft=device:c,cvosrc:cse.google.online_Brand,cvo_campaign:690748441,cvo_pid:35201331985,cvo_crid:155158479490,Matchtype:,tid:onpl000000,kwid:1,ap:7

I got a utility jacket in a beautiful dusky pink (millennial pink?) a couple years ago but… shock and surprise, it matches with none of my mustard-and-burgundy fall wardrobe. Facepalm. These work much better.
