Ask the Edit Vol. IV, No. Twenty-Six

Sep 6, 2017

An all shoe edition of Ask the Edit, just in time for pre-fall shoe shopping.

Abra,

Last week I fell in love with the Ugg Brinkley driving Mocs in Brindle. On the website, they appear to be an olive/bottle green color – perfect for fall. I went to order them and realized they are actually a putty gray color. While that is still wonderful, now I can’t get the idea of an olive/bottle green leather loafer out of my mind. Can you help me out?

– Rachel C

I found two pairs for you: these dark green G.H. Bass Patricia Driving Mocs and these olive Merona Driving Mocs.

I would also keep an eye out for the M.Gemi Felize mocs; they release them in new colors each season.  They have a brighter, kelly green loafer this season.  However, it’s waitlisted in most sizes.

Hello,

What color rain boots do you wear? Do you have a preferred shaft height? There are so many options to choose from!

Thanks, R

I prefer black, knee-high rain boots.  I own a pair of Burberry rain boots with buckle details.  I often wear dresses with black tights during the winter and early spring, the black boots blend in seamlessly.

Hunter boots are the classic option.  I like this buckle-accented pair and this dark slate/black pair.  If you just want a cheaper version of my boots, try these Henry Ferrerra boots or these discounted Rag & Bone riding rain boots.

If you wear pants or are concerned about calf sweat, you might want to try an ankle-height pair.  I like this Marc Fisher pair, and these higher-heeled Melissa boots.

If you intend to wear your rain boots in the wintertime, I recommend warm socks.  Hunter makes a pair of socks that line the boots and keep feet warm.  If it’s really cold, these down socks are worth a look.

Dear Belle,

When is it okay to start wearing boots?  I splurged on some Frye Adie boots and I want to wear them right now. Right now.

Dawn

For booties, like the pair you bought (so cute, btw), you can start wearing them, right now.  It’s September; there are pumpkin spice lattes on the menu, boots should be fine.  I would pair them with distressed jeans, or, if it’s still warm where you live, a shirtdress.

As for knee-high boots, I usually won’t wear them until the daytime high is below 62-degrees or it’s October.  Obviously, this depends on where you live, but if it’s still hot enough that you don’t need a jacket, it’s probably too early for boots.

Hello,

Dumb question: How do you clean suede?  I bought a pair of suede pumps and realize I don’t know how to keep them in good shape.

Help. TH

First, you need to protect your suede shoes before you wear them.  Fyre makes a great suede and nubuck protector that’s easy to use at home.  Just make sure you do it in a well-ventilated area.

Second, to clean my boots, I only use Jason Markk products.  For suede, you want his suede brush and eraser kit.  For leather boots, I use his Quick Wipes to keep the dirt, road salt, and mud off my shoes.  I also have his Travel Kit in case my boots need a deeper scrub.

Last, the key to keeping suede looking new is being smart about it.  If it’s raining or snowing, even if they’re properly treated, limit their exposure to the elements.

Dear Abra,

Do you know if anyone still sells those Ciao Bella boots?  I bought a pair after reading your blog a few years ago and they need to be replaced.  Bluefly isn’t carrying them anymore.

Sincerley, Sam

A few pairs still exist on Amazon.  You can find them (new and used) on eBay, Poshmark, Tradesy, etc., but I’m not aware of any retailer still selling them new.  It’s too bad, they were great boots.

Love the Burberry rain boots! Slightly off-topic question but when would you say is an appropriate time to begin wearing black tights?

  2. Emily says:

Belle (and readers) – Any tips about how to wear ankle boots with a taller shaft, like the Frye boots above? I have short legs and wide calves and wearing booties that cover up my ankles makes my legs look stocky. And how to wear them with pants? Tuck them in, roll them up?

Re: the rain boots. I highly, highly suggest the J.Crew Chelsea-style rain boots. I bought them during the inevitable 40% off your purchase sale (though they’re not that expensive in the first place, especially factoring in cost-per-wear) and they were an absolute staple in my wardrobe last winter. I live in Seattle, so I basically need a rain-proof shoe every day from October – April. Oftentimes, I never took them off when I got to the office and just wore them as a bootie with pants or a dress and tights.

I have forsaken actual rainboots for waterproofed leather boots and I’ve never gone back. Aquatalia and Blondo both weatherproof all of their boots, and Rockport, Cole Haan, and a few other have some waterproof styles.

I have an injury and heavy, not well constructed rubber boots are murder on my feet and joints.

Another good brand for waterproof leather boots is La Canadienne. I love my waterproof black knee-high boots for work in the fall & winter. My commute involves quite a bit of walking outside (DC) and I no longer have to change my shoes when I get to the office on rainy & snowy days. They’re also great boots in general; I’ve received countless compliments. Note, the brand does run quite narrow.

+1 for waterproofed leather boots. I have Aquatalia and Timberland in waterproof suede. They are totally rainproof (and snowy slush-proof), and the level of comfort, style, and craftsmanship are awesome.

  5. Julie says:

I just saw Macy’s has the Michael Kors daisy moc in the olive shade – limited sizes but another good option.

What’s the quality level at River Island? Dying to have the shirtdress and a few other things there. Their prices are affordable, so I’m a little nervous.

  7. I bought those Ciao Bella boots on your recommendation years ago and they are still going strong!

  8. Lauren says:

I’m in a similar boat as the reader who bought Ciao Bella boots on your recommendation years ago, and now I have a hard time finding anything else I like. It’s been a hunt to find new ones over the years (I wear black ones so often I wear them out easily), but I have had great luck with Bluefly for still finding them. It might be too early now, but they could show up there in the next few months.

  9. R says:

I have a pair of these Les Tres Jolis (also LTJ)boots: https://www.studio67blog.ca/2016-hot-shoes-les-tres-jolis-rubber-boots-for-women-black-p-557.html

The lower part is waterproof wellington-like and the upper leg is leather (inside and out), with a zip up the back. They work really well, and I like the look of having the leather part.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
