Ask the Edit: Vol. IV, No. Twenty-Four

Aug 8, 2017

This week’s Ask the Edit topics include how to pick a foundation shade, shoes for outdoor weddings, the best body lotion, and more.

Hi Abra,

I’m hunting for a white t-shirt that is completely opaque.  Not sheer, not semi-sheer, opaque.  Does anyone, anyone at all, make a white t-shirt that I cannot see through?

Ali

Ah, the eternal struggle.  My favorite is when designers tell you the shirts are sheer because it’s the style not because they cheaped out on materials.  Right, J.Crew?

There are still a few brands that stock opaque tees.  I own this Scotch & Soda tee that is so popular it is completely sold out in white, but is available in other colors.  I like the weight of the material and the durability after several washes.

Some of Gap’s tees, including this fitted crewneck, are opaque.  The brand is trying to return to its roots, so their tees are worth a try.  AllSaints Daisy tee goes beyond basic with a modern cut and double layering.  And Aritzia’s Wilfred Free tees are known for their opacity.

Hello,

Do you have a favorite body lotion?  My skin’s been so dry since I moved to Colorado, I need something to take down the itch.

Love the blog! Tirza

I use Kiehl’s Creme de Corps.  I buy the jumbo size; it lasts a year.  If you need something under-$10, I like Eucerin Calming Creme.

Belle,

My sister is getting married next month and the wedding is outside on the lawn of our church.  These are the shoes she chose.  Can you help me find a similar pair of wedges so I don’t end up ankle deep in dirt?

Sincerely, TH

First, you don’t need to switch shoes (and you shouldn’t without her blessing).  These Soulmates heel caps distribute the weight so your spikes won’t aerate the lawn.  And they’re clear, so you won’t even notice them.  I wore a pair to a polo event, and they kept my heels dirt free all day.

If you want to push for a change in footwear, these Adrianna Papell wedges are pretty–and as sleek as a wedge gets.  Though you may have more luck pushing for a block-heel pump, like these Nine West Nora sandals.

Belle,

How do you find a foundation shade that matches? I’m having extreme difficulty with this seemingly impossible feat.

Love the blog! Thanks for all your help over the years. -AF

My first suggestion would be to go to Sephora.  Sephora + Pantone created Color IQ, a shade matching device that helps you find your perfect shade.  I go in twice a year to get my winter and summer foundation, and it’s impressive how accurate the device is.  And once you learn your Color IQ number, you can use it to buy products online without going into the store.

If you’re hunting for drugstore brands, visit Ulta or order from their online store.  They have a wide selection, and you can return open products within 60-days with receipt.

To test a shade match, you want to dab a little onto your jawline and onto your forehead.  Why those two places?  Your forehead gives you a straight color match.  Your jawline takes into account the color of your neck, which is usually 1-2 shades lighter than your face.  You’re looking for a shade that looks good in both places.

If you’re still having trouble finding a shade match, it’s helpful to figure out what your skin’s undertone is.  You can be warm, cool, or neutral.  This very helpful article from Bustle will help you sort it out.

Have one foundation you like and you’re trying to find out what shade you need in another formula/brand?  Temptalia offers a useful tool to help you sort it out.

Hi Belle,

First of all, congrats on the new design, it looks great. My boyfriend’s friend is getting married on the beach in Mexico, and guests have been advised to wear either navy or pink. I’m looking for a long, breezy navy dress, and I’m ok with it being a little sexier than what I would wear to an east coast wedding. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Mary

Breezy, navy dresses…let’s see…

This Lovers + Friends dress in navy and pink floral definitely has the sexy part down, but the sleeves might be too hot for Mexico.  The Ann Taylor off the shoulder maxi is more demure for sure, but still beachy and relaxed.  For something in between, try this crochet and chiffon Charlotte Russe or this Hope and Ivy wrap maxi with a sheer skirt.

Is dictating to wedding guests what colors to wear a thing now?

    • Pompom says:

I read this as she’s in the wedding and attendants’ shoes were chosen. I could be wrong, but that’s reasonable.

      • Anna says:

Cait is referring to the last question. Apparently it is a a thing, and it is NOT okay. I’ll accept asking people to wear all white or black (the latter might be weird), but asking them to form part of your decor is a little too much.

        • Pompom says:

Ah! Sorry!!! I see that now (so many wedding questions!)

In that case, yeah, no. I hate that. With you both.

Carry on…! I need more coffee and reading lessons!

    • Jenn s. says:

Color me shocked. I’m declining the invitation to any wedding that dictates the colors I wear beyond, perhaps, saying, “Hey, bridesmaids are wearing burgundy FYI, so maybe not that.”

Formality is one thing, color is another – your wedding guests aren’t your props. Ffs.

      • Mary G. says:

When I told my sister about said wedding, she said “It’s going to look like a baby shower.” Word.

  2. Gwen says:

Regarding the opaque white tee- I recently ordered Everlane’s Cotton V:https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-v-white?collection=womens-tees

    It’s 100% opaque.

  3. J says:

Wait, where did the post on white button ups go?

    • J says:

Ah, I found it, my bad (for anyone else still sorting out where to find things, it’s below the July 27 Ask The Edit Post and appears when you hit the “Load More Posts” button).

  4. Pompom says:

For LW 1, I suggest the mossimo boyfriend (maybe?) tee at target. It’s the closest I’ve come to opaque, and I’m astounded by the quality from a 15$ target tee.

    • mkbrod2 says:

seconding! and unlike lots of brands the T’s also have real short-sleeve…sleeves and you can get them for like $5 during season changes.

  5. Anna says:

A few weeks ago, you raved about an Lands End tee. Has that fallen out of favor?

    • B says:

I have Lands End white tees and I love them! Not see through, great fit, hold up well. I highly recommend them.

    • Belle says:

I have that striped one which I love and own six of but I haven’t bought a white one, yet. I was honestly so tired when I wrote this, I didn’t even think of it. They make great tees though!

  6. Lindsay says:

I had really good luck with the Fair Indigo white shirt that I bought on Amazon. Link: https://a.co/cPIgG6V

  7. Jenn S. says:

    Belle,

The Charlotte Russe dress is cute. I haven’t looked at CR in forever and a day because a) I’ve largely outgrown the things they choose to sell and b) their fast-fashion quality seemed to plummet even more about a decade ago. Have you bought anything from them lately/think they’re worth a regular browse?

    Thanks!

  8. Erika Morris says:

I know what you mean about dry skin in the mountains! It is basically an elevated dessert!! We have a home in Jackson Hole WY and there is a company based there that has formulated the BEST lotion, not too heavy, not too light and extremely nourishing. I just saw it for sale in CT so they are going nationwide. Also available on their website: https://www.trilipiderm.com/. Can’t recommend it highly enough.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
