Happy Hour: Grapefruit Jalapeño Margaritas

Jun 23, 2017

We don’t cocktail much at home anymore, but I’m hosting a get together later this month that will require a signature drink.  Since it’s finally summer, how about a grapefruit and jalapeno margarita?  It’s everything you love about a Paloma with a bit more spice.

The Work Edit’s Grapefruit/Jalapeno Margarita

Juice of 2 small or 1 large lime

1 teaspoon of agave nectar

Juice of 1 Texas Red Grapefruit

1.5 ounces of Patron Silver Tequila

3 jalapeno slices, 1/4 inch rounds

***

In a cocktail shaker, muddle the jalapeno slices, lime juice, and agave nectar with a bit of the grapefruit flesh.  You can use a real muddler, but I just use a wooden spoon.  Once you’ve mashed up a bit, it’s time to add the rest of the liquids.  This

Once you’ve mashed up a bit, it’s time to add the rest of the liquids.  This $9 juicer will make quick work of that grapefruit.   Now add the tequila and a handful of ice from the fridge, and shake properly.

Most recipes tell you strain the cocktail into a glass, but I like to get a little of the pulp from the bottom.  So I’ll typically spoon a small amount of fruit pulp into the glass, then add the ice and some thinly sliced fruit.  I don’t like a salt rim, but if you do, that’s your preference. I’m still loving these etched glasses from Anthropologie.

If you find the recipe too tart, squeeze in a bit of orange juice or a splash pineapple juice.

So what do you wear while drinking a margarita at home?  Well, if you really want to spice up your backyard barbecue, a frilly off the shoulder dress is always a good choice.

Jonathan Simkhai Chain Link Dress ($595)

Okay, agreed, this dress is too fancy for cocktails at home, but I’ve been searching for any reason to post it for a while.  Even if I was just posting it as eye candy.  I love the ladder stitching.

This bright Endless Rose ruffled shoulder dress is worth a look.  It could be really fun for a party.  For something more relaxed, try this Catherine Malandrino shift.  I also like this ASOS striped maxi for an affordable $60.

Plus-size? This Eloquii Easy Dress is very summery and adorable.  Petite?  I like this red Eliza J maxi dress.  Tall?  This white ASOS dress with geometric embroidery is fun.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
