Belle’s 2017 Academy Awards Recap

Feb 27, 2017

Another awards season has come and gone.  Trophies were handed out.  Speeches were made.  Tributes paid.  And had it not been for that little (aka monstrous) Best Picture incident with octogenarian Bonnie and Clyde, this would have been an Oscar ceremony like any other.  But since most of us probably haven’t seen any of the nominees, let’s get to the matter at hand, the dresses.

I tried to make K watch the Oscar arrivals.  I would have had better luck making him watch Sex and the City reruns in Ukrainian.  So we watched The Walking Dead (apocalyptic zombies, I don’t get it either), and I pulled the looks I loved and loathed from the Internet.

Hailee Steinfeld in Ralph Russo

I wanted to like this dress, and from the waist up, I do.  However, the super sheer skirt might as well have a sign on it that says, “Yes, I’m trying too hard.”

Despite the poor tailoring (that hem would make my seamstress cry), I adore this dress.  The neckline and bold color are the thing of my structured, minimalist dreams.

In Hollywood’s latest reboot, Laura Ingalls Wilder teleports to 1984 to attend the prom, hilarity ensues.

I love this dress.  It’s like a Degas painting.

Brie Larson in Oscar de la Renta.

I’ve seen this dress before, they used it to drape the SCOTUS bench after Justice Scalia passed.

How to Get Away with Murder: This dress slays.

Best and worst dressed after the jump…

My worst dressed wasn’t even a contest.  Oh, you though Dakota’s urine-yellow salute to Little House was the obvious winner?

Behold, Vanessa Hudgen’s salute to Gypsy.  It looks like the latest incarnation of the lingerie-wedding dress trend with a side of Tessie the Tassel Twirler.   Stay tuned for the inevitable fan dance.  Sing out, Louise!

As for my best dressed…

Priyanka Chopra is an art deco vision in this Ralph & Russo dress.  The structure, the open sides, the double cuff.  It’s a sleeker, more modern take on the dress she wore last year, which was also a dream.

  1. Katey says:

How can Vanessa Hudgens be the worst dresses at the Oscars if she didn’t even go to the Oscars? She wore that dress to the Elton John party- the beige carpet is a huge clue.

    • Belle says:

Vanity Fair’s and Elton John’s party count, in my opinion. The reason is that many celebs attend both and change from one to the other, and anyone on the list at the parties could easily have been on the list at the Oscar’s depending which network was hosting.

  2. Anna says:

I don’t think Vanessa Hudgens should count since she wasn’t at the Oscars. It was an Oscar viewing party. I’m sure if you count all of those, you’d open up a whole can of ugly.

  3. KLC says:

I was so underwhelmed this year by the gown, ugh. But actually one of my favorites was Giuliana Rancic. When one of the tv hosts is out shining the nominees… that’s a problem…

  4. Em says:

Karlie Kloss and Naomie Harris looked amazing…surprised to not see those on here. Also caught a glimpse of Kirsten Dunst and she looked amazing. Agree that Vanessa Hudgens doesn’t count, she just wore that dress to a party. Kind of a lot left off of here!

    • Belle says:

I hated Naomie Harris’s dress. I thought I was going to love it until I saw the bottom. The shoes were cool, though.

  5. KS says:

Emma Roberts was my favorite by a mile. Also loved Naomie Harris, Emma Stone and Michelle Williams.

  6. dc anon says:

    Jessica Biel looked amazing.

  7. Alison says:

Very, very underwhelmed by this year’s gowns. Can we get a change.org petition going to get Rachel Zoe back to styling, at least during awards season?

That said, for me the best dressed was Viola Davis, hands down. She (or her stylist) understands EXACTLY what works for her, which I am sure isn’t easy when you are trying to exist in Hollywood as someone who is older than 25 and does not wear a sample size. And she is a phenomenal actress and a phenomenal person. If you haven’t seen it, I’d recommend this NY Magazine profile of her from late last year. I was thinking about it while watching her stand on the stage wearing that dress, giving that speech, after winning an award for that performance…chills, tears, all the feels.

  8. Mrs. Jones says:

Belle, I agree with you entirely. Also love Viola Davis’s hair!

  9. Ellie says:

Is it just me, or do everyone’s eyebrows look way overdone? I scrolled past some headlines and Instagram posts, and it seems like everyone has unnaturally thick bows – it’s almost comical.

  10. Elizabeth says:

Ooh you should try to see of the movies if you haven’t gotten to, yet! This was a good year. Not like some years where none of the nominees seemed appealing… Hidden Figures is an incredible story so well done. La La Land is magical in its own way–and you’ll be singing the music forever. Already want to see it again. Fences was a powerful personal story (if sad). I have heard great reviews from friends on Lion–can’t wait to see that one.

You’re such a good girlfriend to watch Walking Dead haha! K is lucky! I roped my hubby into watching the Oscars with me ?

  11. Bonnie says:

Agreed on Olivia Hamilton’s dress. And I think Michelle Williams always, always looks stunning and singular; Sunday night was no exception. Janelle Monae also looked phenomenal.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
