Belle’s New Favorite Black Flats

Nov 3, 2016

For several years, I’ve touted the glories of the BP. Moveover Flat.   It’s fairly comfortable, looks great, and, at $50, if you ruin a pair, you won’t cry yourself to sleep.  But my one issue with the shoes is that after 4-6 months of wear, they stretch out.  It’s less than ideal.

So a few weeks ago, when I was strolling through Nordstrom and spotted a similar pair of shoes in an under-$100 price point, I had to give them a try.

Dr. Scholl’s Vixen Ballet Flat ($88)

The Dr. Scholl’s name is synonymous with gel inserts and orthotics, so it’s not what I think of when I think “stylish basic work shoe.”  But these Kimber flats have everything I’m looking for in a work flat.

First, the memory foam insole is really comfortable.  The cushioning is far superior to any other flat I’ve ever worn.  But unlike so many padded footbeds it isn’t too thick.

Second, rubber sole.  You know how I love a rubber sole for absorbing shock for a long day on your feet.

Last, they look great on your foot.  They look like they cost more than their $88 price tag.  Very sleek, and surprisingly chic for a basic flat.

My only complaint, and it’s a small one, they are not ready to wear out of the box (at least on my foot).  Because the toe box was a little snug, I needed to break them in.  This could be because I have very high arches and insteps, or it could be the shoe.  Regardless, this problem was easily remedied with a shoe stretcher.

Don’t love a pointed toe?  Dr. Scholl’s makes a very similar shoe, the Vixen, with a round toe.

I really like these shoes.  Of course, we’ll see how they hold up over time.  But they are a great option for those who stand or walk a lot during the day.  With a little testing, they might even be a good commuter shoe for those with a mid-length commute.  I like them so much, and was so impressed with their comfortability, that I bought these Dr. Scholl’s boots with a tassel detail in grey suede.

These were my favorite pair of work shoes before they got too stretched out to wear anymore, about 6-8 months after purchase. They aren’t ideal for ladies with wide feet or bunions because they stretch out and won’t hug the heel anymore. By the end, they were falling off my heel constantly and I couldn’t wear them with tights because of the slipping. But 8 months is a decent run for an affordable shoe that I wore almost daily.

DSW also typically carries these for around $50. The biggest downside for me is that they make my feet smell more than real leather flats, but that is solvable with powder/liners/etc.

I’ve had trouble with Dr. Scholl’s flats digging into my Achilles and causing cuts or blisters. Maybe this pair is different, and maybe it’s just my feet, but I now go for flats that have the flexible elastic in the back. Cole Haan Tali is my current go-to. A bit more expensive, but very worth it for me personally.

You may want to take a look at the Vionic Larrun Loafer. They are the most comfortable flats I own and I bought them in the black snakeskin AND leopard calfhair. $119 but amazing quality!

i bought a version of these at DSW last year and love the comfort of them! sadly, they have stretched out on me. but i have almost worn through the heel anyway, so maybe its time to replace…

Those Dr. Scholls boots are super cute! Can you do a review on them, please?

For another comfort option, I suggest the Gilmore flat by Cole Haan. They are HARD to come by, but I’ve commuted in them for 2 years and they’re in great shape. (My commute includes a 1 mile walk when weather permits).

Love these shoes. I worked the 2015 US Papal Visit – 6 days, 3 cities, 0 sleep, and hours and hours of being on my feet, and I would not have been able to survive it without these shoes.

Could you do a “The Range” post on pointed toe black flats? I’m in middle cubicle price range and need to get a new pair. Thanks! As always, I love your blog. Really appreciate you sticking with it and providing quality content all these years.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
