Ask Belle: Let’s Talk Leggings

Aug 10, 2016

Hi Belle,

I own two pairs of Zella leggings thanks to your blog.  Last month, you posted about a Lululemon pair that you like.  Did you change teams?  Which are your favorite?

Love the blog! Michon

Which type of leggings I buy, depends on my needs.  I wouldn’t wear the same pair to the gym that I wear to the office (as tights).  Here are the kinds I buy for different occasions.

Office.  On cold winter days, I love to wear leggings under sweater dresses.  This is one of my favorite casual Friday looks for winter.  And even when I was wearing a professional dress, I would sometimes wear leggings underneath on my commute, and then change into tights on arrival.

I like the Zella Live In leggings for this because they’re thick, warm, and super soft to the touch.  (Also in plus-size.)

Around the House.  As my Zella pairs wear out, the older pairs are rotated into my at-home wardrobe.  But my favorite leggings to wear at home are the lululemon Align Pant, which are so comfortable, you feel like you’re wearing nothing at all.  If you need something less expensive, try Modcloth’s Simple and Sleek leggings (also in plus).

To Yoga.  I used to have the same Friday routine: class, yoga, errands.  My outfit was always the same: lululemon Wunder Under high rise pant, a long Athleta Chi top, loose sweater, and gold-accented New Balance sneakers.

The Wunder Under pants are incredibly supportive, thick, and comfortable.  The high rise really holds you in, and they are super flattering.  For an inexpensive dupe, try the Forever21 Active Yoga Pants.

For Hiking.  When I go hiking, or even for a long walk, I prefer a cropped legging.  I also don’t like to wear black because it gets too hot.  I spotted these Yummie Tummie leggings in a pretty lavender and had to have them.  They have good compression and a very comfy wide waistband.  In the under-$30 category, these Old Navy’s Go-Dry Mid-Rise Compression legging is an excellent choice.

So what are your favorite leggings for different activities?

This post couldn’t have come at a better time, as I’m searching for leggings to wear to yoga, under dresses and long tops for the fall, and at the airport for my upcoming trip to Europe!

I recently became a little obsessed with the lularoe leggings! They have them in a lot of fun prints and pretty solid colors, are incredibly soft and comfortable. Highly recommend them!

You can’t go wrong with Old Navy Go-Dry Compression Leggings. Ordered a pair of (the wrong size) Zellas during the Nordy’s sale, and returned them because the Old Navy ones were just a great IMO.

YES! If you are not wearing Lularoe leggings, you are totally missing out! They are the softest, most comfortable leggings ever!

What type of sports bra would you recommend with the Athlete top? I always have trouble getting sports bras that work with that kind of top.
