Six End-of-Summer Beauty Buys

Aug 1, 2016

august beauty buys

August: The month when you look up from your mountain of work, turn on the out-of-office message and slip away from your desk for a little bit of R&R.  Because soaking up the last bits of summer is your God given right.  Here are six beauty products that will help your skin and hair through the waning days of summer.

One. Drybar’s Mai Tai Spritzer.  Yesterday, I walked down the stairs, pointed to my perfectly styled hair and said to my boyfriend, “Baby, we’re going out.  Because this hair day needs to be shared with the world.”

The secret?  This absolutely incredible sea salt spray that imparts both texture and volume.  I love it so much, I actually retired my can of mousse.  Which is like Donald Trump giving up spray tans.  Yes, it’s that big of a deal.

Two. Glamazing Gravity Mud Set.  One of the best things I bought from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, this mud both purifies and firms skin.  I applied it for the first time this weekend, and my skin looked incredible.  Also, the way it turns from white to chrome when set makes application and removal foolproof.

Need a more affordable treatment?  I keep this Freeman 5-in-1 mask at my parent’s house in case my pores need a pick me up while I’m visiting them.

Three. St. Tropez In Shower Gradual Tan. When I first read about this product, I thought it was a gimmick.  A gradual in-shower self tanner?  It seemed too good to be true.  But it’s real.  And the best part is it won’t rub off on your clothing.

Four. TonyMoly Banana Sleeping Pack.  Working women don’t get enough sleep, so your vacation is the perfect time to rest.  This Banana night cream from TonyMoly, however, helps you fake the look of a solid 8-hours even when you’re not on vacay.  The chamomile soothes skin, while the banana extract revitalizes.  Just remember, a little goes a long way.

Five. Clinique Sweet Pots.  Lips feeling a little dry?  These little pots contain both a lip scrub and a moisturizing tinted balm.  So you can get kissably soft lips with a hint of color.  If your lips are feeling a bit dry, try this Sister & Co. Raw Coconut Lip Tonic.  It smells amazing and moisturizes like a dream.

Six. Eva NYC Therapy Session Hair Mask.  Sun, chlorine, and my summer highlights are hard on my hair.  This inexpensive hair mask, made with Argan oil, does an amazing job of bringing it back to life.  Prefer a lightweight leave-in?  It’s a 10 makes a lightweight version of their Miracle Leave-In Conditioner.

So what are your summer skin and hair care must haves?

I’m gonna disagree on the St. Tropez gradual in shower tanner. I used nearly an entire bottle of this stuff and saw virtually no results. The reviews of the product are similarly bad. Great idea, but it doesn’t work. =(

    • Jenna says:

I find it works best on pale skin in the winter. I’m sickly pale and it kept me from looking truly anemic when I hadn’t seen the sun in months, but I’m not sure it would be great if you’re looking for a deep tan or if you have darker skin. I also gradually increased the time I left it on, up to 10 minutes near the end of the bottle.

    • Belle says:

It worked on my legs and arms, but maybe it was more noticeable because of the contrast with my untanned torso.

    • Valerie says:

From personal experience as a super pale woman (who sometimes prefers to appear less zombie-like even if I haven’t gotten outside in the summertime), I still think the Jergens Natural Glow moisturizer works the best when applied at night. I don’t turn orange, and even after trying several more expensive products from St. Tropez and Sephora, this one gives me the most natural-looking subtle (fake) tan.

I love that you’ve increased your number of beauty posts!

    • MK says:

Me too! I always love these posts!

      • Crystal says:

Thirded! Even when we have different hair/skin concerns, it’s so helpful and interesting to see what other women are trying and loving (or rejecting)–particularly because we know your posts reflect your authentic opinions are not the result of soliciting freebies.

If I can find a sample of Mai Tai I’m considering it. I just got a sample of Ouai’s Texture/Wave Spray and it was basically a hair perfume. Disappointing.

  4. Trish says:

I loved the Mai tai SOOO much but it has sulfates and made me have a rash everywhere. Apparently almost every sea salt spray has sulfates in it.. If anyone has a sulfate free sea spray to recommend, I would love one!

Thank you for these beauty posts, my favorite.

I cam across another bronzer called Prtty Peaushun, which has been my favorite out of all the self tanners I’ve tried. It goes on super light, but gives off a natural spray tan look, without the streaks from a Jergens or spray/foam tanner. Several uses and I’m not even half way done.
