1) Young people are oblivious to the gender pay gap, or choose to believe time will heal it. (Financial Review)

2) I know no one wants to think about fall, but these suede booties with knot detail from WHBM should be on your must-have list.

3) The average US women wears a size 14, so why do so few retailers stock that size? (Racked)

4) If you need a new black bag for fall, feast your eyes on the Rebecca Minkoff Isabella Tea Satchel.

5) Chicago is still paying off its failed Olympic bid seven years later. (Chicago Tribune)

6) New from ASOS, this lipstick red tie waist dress for Friday day-to-night.  I love this breezy stencil-floral wrap dress.  And don’t miss this killer yellow dress from Whistles.

7) The data-driven case for offering employees vacation time and encouraging them to take time off. #useyourdays (HBR)

8) This striped dress from Shopbop is the perfect late-summer/early fall piece.  This $88 boatneck a-line dress from Three Dots is also a good transition piece.

9) A harassment whistle blower goes looking for a new job, watch what happens. (Wired)

10) The beauty mags are totally in love with this Marc Jacobs Air Blush blush duo.  Physician’s Formula makes a similar blush for $10.

11) Convent asks prospective nun to come back when she’s paid off her student loans. (Yahoo)

12) This colored Igloo mini-fridge is the stuff of college dorm dreams.  Definitely need one for my office.

The fridge link is sending me to the HBR vacation piece, just fyi

  2. Alison says:

I have had two college acquaintances enter religious life as nuns — one of them for sure was told that she had to pay off her loans prior to entering the convent but did end up being able to pay them off before her intended convent-joining date.

  3. E says:

I think your ASOS dress link might be wrong. The one it connects to is a bodycon dress that’s definitely not appropriate for day.

    • Belle says:

Sorry, Asos titles their clothing in a generic fashion so links get screwed up. I think it’s fixed now.

  4. Addie says:

Re #3: I really liked this article. It would be so much easier if stores just sold all their items in a variety of sizes. I love Dress Barn but their website categorizes everything into misses, petites and plus size. I generally I fall into misses sizes, but sometimes I need a petite dress because my legs are so short. I’m not petite anywhere else though so I have to size up and hope it doesn’t need too much tailoring. I’m definitely not an off the rack girl.

  5. Shelley says:

Loved the article about store sizing. It just boggles my mind that retailers aren’t marketing to this section of the population. Imagine how much money they would make if they offered all sizes. It seems almost stupid and bad business sense to me that clothes aren’t being offered in all sizes already. Every time I go shopping the first sizes to be sold out are the sizes from 8-12 (i’m an 8-10). Seems logical to cater to what the population wants and needs.

  6. Bonnie says:

Thanks for the article about sizing. I’m currently on the cusp, too (generally a size 10 to 12). I also left a comment yesterday but it didn’t seem to go through. I was waiting for an appt. yesterday, and I thought of you–there were two women who desperately need to be reading this blog. One was wearing an ill-fitting long skirt with saggy tights and Croc-like shoes with no back heel that were two sizes too big. The other was wearing a see-through blouse that didn’t leave much to the imagination. They were both going to a buttoned-up finance office.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
