Quick Fashion Queries Vol. II, No. One

Feb 16, 2016

Dear Belle,

Do you have any recommendations for a cute pill box for my purse? I need to keep medication with me, but I hate pulling out a prescription bottle at the (open) office. Is there something that is well made and stylish?

Love, love your blog. Thanks, Katie

If you need something to carry medication, this Henri Bendel zip-up leather pouch is a nice choice.  This 7-day pill case gives you the standard plastic carrier with a leather surround.  I’d also have a look at these metal GoPillable containers that have three areas for medication.

Belle,

Settle a debate for me: Are these cape-style jackets appropriate for work?  This Who What Wear for Target jacket is cute, but I think it’s wrong for work.

Sincerely, Virginia

I enjoy the cape jackets.  I think they look incredible with cocktail and party dressed (like this fun fringe number from Adelyn Rae).  You can even pair them with distressed denim and a simple Everlane tee.

But for work?  No, unless you work in a very creative office (PR, fashion, etc.), then they’re too fashion forward for the office.

Dear Belle,

I’m in a wedding in October, and I’ve received marching orders to find round toe suede pumps in emerald green.  I’d prefer a 3” heel if possible.  So far it’s been slim pickings (maybe I’m better off waiting a few months?), but if you have any ideas I’d love to hear them!

Thank you! WR

That’s a pretty specific ask.  Sole Society has a green suede heel but it’s more pine than emerald. These Sole Society Peyton bow pumps, with a pointed toe, are cool.

I think your best bet, might be designing the shoes yourself.  Shoes of Prey offers a custom design feature.  Nina also offers a custom option, but their fabric is satin.

Hi Belle,

I hate basic blazers, but I recently bought the open front Halogen blazer you recommended, and it’s great.  Do you have some other recommendations for blazers that are just one-step away from basic?  I could use some help finding a few more.

Thanks, Tara

That is a great jacket!  I love the pale pink version.

If you like the look of open jackets.  This Rebecca Minkoff Becky jacket has a cool shape.  I also like this BCBGeneration jacket.

Want a new style?  The long coat is one of my favorites.  This H&M textured-weave jacket is fab.  They also have this fun peplum jacket and this fringe-trim jacket.

I’m sorry, WR, that’s a ridiculous ask. I would recommend talking to the MOH and asking if the bride can find a specific shoe in a reasonable price point that she’d like everyone to wear. Or present one of the first two lovely options that Belle found and recommend they have everyone get the same pair.

I’ve been in many, many weddings and sometimes brides get so excited about their vision that they don’t realize how complicated they’re make the lives of their bridesmaids. She might not realize the Pinterest picture she saw is two years old, and emerald isn’t the Pantone color of the year anymore. Not to mention, being so specific can be very expensive – the Shoes of Prey shoes would be $200+. Since the wedding isn’t until October, I would bring this up in a very nice way now, as opposed to leaving it until later in the game, when it will cause the bride stress.

At the very least, band together with the rest of the bridesmaids, find a shoe everyone likes, and tell the bride/MOH that you’re all buying the same pair and give them the chance to give it a thumbs up.

    • LS says:

      Ditto this advice

    • Marg says:

Ditto as well. Is there an option to get her to drop the round-toe requirement at least? All the green suede heels I’ve seen have pointy toes, I have a pair of the mira from madewell and love them, if that helps.

    • WR says:

Ha, thanks–I agree! She actually assigned each bridesmaid a different color, so maybe the person who drew pink will have better luck? The example shoe picture she sent around was a 5 inch heel, so maybe I’m not thinking tall enough. (Sadly, a bad ankle won’t let me be great.)

Either way, the wedding is in a tropical locale, so the suede requirement just makes me laugh.

      • Anna says:

HOLY COW!!!! Sorry, but this is ridiculous. No one is even going to notice the shoes.

      • B says:

You may still want to bring this up to the MOH… When my best friend got married, she was dead set on doing an ombre of purple for the bridesmaid dress colors. It wasn’t until I got her in the bridal shops and put all the available colors of purple next to each other that she realized how terrible it looked in person (some shades were more red, some more blue, none of the lines carried 6 different shades of purple).

Why, for heavens sake, in a tropical location, can’t everyone do a nice gold sandal with a heel and be done with it?

        • WR says:

That’s a good call…I figured I’d give it another week of searching and then sound a very gentle alarm.

Nice gold sandals….sigh. So cute. So appropriate. Maybe I’ll find some for the rehearsal dinner in protest.

Thank you, everyone, for the advice!

    • Chloe says:

I agree, but I also just ordered Shoes of Prey for my own wedding – so if you do wind up that route, message me on here and I’ll shoot over my 10% discount code that they sent over! I am in love with my shoes. A kitten heel was $164 in two colors.

  2. Jennifer D says:

I’m not sure that you need to work in a _super_ creative office in order to wear a cape jacket. So many offices are business casual these days that it might be just fine. And it would get you a lot of “cool jacket!” accolades. Of course, like any other fashion choice, if you have to ask yourself if it would be appropriate for the office, then it probably isn’t.

    • Maria says:

I second this. It also really depends on the cape. If it is very well structured and tailored, it’s gonna look pretty sharp. I don’t see why it wouldn’t fly pretty much anywhere (besides maybe government or law offices).

  3. Chris says:

Belle! What about the rest of your love story?! I’ve been waiting with bated breath all weekend.

    • Belle says:

      Friday.

      • Rea says:

        Hey Belle,

I too am curious to see part 2! I relocated back to good old “Butte, America”, and as a 30 year old professional, the dating pool seems very shallow (non-existent). In regards to online dating, as well as generally meeting new people in Small town, I would love to know your thoughts.

  4. Keilexandra says:

My new obsession for travel accessories is Flight 001, and they have a cute pill case: https://www.flight001.com/f1-stewardess-pill-case-teal.html

  5. Megan says:

It might not be quite as fashion-forward an answer, but when I’m travelling somewhere special and want a small souvenir, I’ve found that the least objectionable item in all those little tourist shops is often a cute pillbox. It’s the perfect souvenir – inexpensive, functional, easy to carry home, and every time I need an aspirin I remember my trip to London.

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
