1) Meet the 10 Most Powerful Women in History.  A fun Friday read from Listverse.

2) Stop the presses. This $51 Neiman Marcus tote mixes black and navy, has a cool shape, and is reversible.  Need it.

3) A brief, but valuable history of how the U.S. government’s quest to defeat communism led to the rebirth of Salafism and the rise of ISIS.  (Salon)

4) Nordstrom Rack has some nice work dresses.  This plum Tahari dress is pretty.  Brighten things up with this red Emploi dress.  For casual Friday, try this Max Studio fit and flare.

5) People who sleep late are actually smarter and more creative.  You hear that, Mom and Dad?  (Elite Daily)

6) This Madewell pendant blends natural elements with clean, architectural lines.  I also love their slip-knot bracelet and simple balance necklace with a cool geometric look.

7) Ronda Rousey, and the danger of being imperfect while female. (Medium)

8) Need tights?  I bought these Spanx Luxe Leg Blackout Tights, and I am in love. Total opacity achieved.

9) Demaryius Thomas writes a moving piece about losing his mother to drugs and prison, and how he survived a hard childhood to make it to the NFL. (The Players Tribune)

10) Looking for a cool gift for the man in your life?  Try a Hook + Albert bag that switches from a duffle to garment bag or a Yeti cooler.

11) Why do recipe writers lie (and lie, and lie) about how long it takes to caramelize onions? (Slate)

Eye Candy. The Neiman Marcus Christmas Book is just overly indulgent, capitalist eye candy.  I find it endlessly entertaining to see what Neiman’s can convince the under-rich to buy.

  1. Valerie says:

Re #8- Belle, do you like these Spanx tights better than the Commando opaque ones?

  2. Molly says:

Caramelize onions in a slow cooker overnight – they’re fantastic and so easy.

    • Anna says:

I read this article a few years back, and got really frustrated that the author fails to recognize the difference between caramelized onions and browned onions. To make a flavor base for a recipes (mirepoix or sofrito in Latin food, or whatever the sauteed onions and spices in Indian food is called which the author refers to), you’re looking to soften and add some color to the onions, which does take about ten minutes. Caramelizing is a long process that brings out the sugars and breaks down the onion much more. It’s for dishes where you want the onion to shine like in a French onion soup. They’re completely different purposes.

  3. RNSF says:

Love the picks from Nordstrom Rack! Some dresses they feature in the “Work Dress” section make me cringe though. Best convince myself that it’s computer generated and nobody picked those short dresses on purpose.

  4. AR says:

That Demaryius Thomas story brought me to tears. I don’t follow sports at all but I love a good human interest story. What a touching essay. Thanks for posting!

  5. LF says:

Thank you for the Rousey article — I was shocked by how vicious the next-day coverage was (though, in retrospect, I suppose I shouldn’t have been). I don’t follow UFC fighting religiously, so I tried not to immediatly judge critics reactions, but that NYT article in particular immediately felt like such a god damn double standard.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
