Quick Beauty Queries Vol. I, No. Four

Belle,

Do you wear red lipstick?  I’m looking for the perfect red for my wedding day.

Cailey

Best wishes on your pending wedding.  Choosing the right red, means choosing the right red for you.  Especially for such an important occasion, you may need to try on a few shades (or a few dozen) to find the right one.  I would recommend making an appointment at Sephora or a department store to do a lipstick scavenger hunt.

As to your question, I rotate between MAC Ruby Woo and Laura Geller Starlet Red.  If you’re looking for a drugstore version, I’ve worn Kate Moss for Rimmel lipstick before, and it’s a good choice.

Dear Belle,

This might be a strange question but what kind of hair ties do you use?  I know it seems like a silly thing but I want to upgrade my ponytail.

Great blog! WB

I don’t like my hair tie to show.  So I use the Goody Ouchless Tort Latex Elastics.  If you’re not crazy about using plastic bands, Goody also makes a cloth-covered one that I like.

Hi!

You mentioned a body lotion you love a while back but I can’t remember what it was!  My skin is getting so parched and it’s not even winter yet.  I would love to know what you use.

Thank you! H

I am a huge Kiehl’s Creme de Corps devotee.  It is everything.  I buy the huge size, and it lasts me for about a year.  Looking for a cheaper option?  Try Burt’s Bees Milk & Honey.

I’ve been wearing the Burts Bees Milk & Honey lotion for about 6-7 months because of Belle’s suggestion…it’s wonderful! The smell isn’t fantastic, and my kids complain about the smell, but there is also a cocoa butter smelling version that works well, too. I’m dying to use the Kiehl’s, but it’s a little expensive.

Re: Red lipstick. My favorite special occasion lipstick is Chanel. It lasts so long and the colors are nuanced and beautiful. My go-to drugstore lipstick is this: https://www.lorealparisusa.com/en/Products/Makeup/Lips/Lip-Color/Infallible-Le-Rouge.aspx?shade=Ravishing-Red Whenever I wear it people (including fancy makeup counter ladies) ask me about it.

BELLE!!!!! WHERE are my Emmy fashion critiques??? I came here just to see them and I am so disappointed. tell me they are coming???

  4. Katie says:

Check out the Besame line of red lipsticks (carried at Sephora). They are fantastic and long wearing and come in several shades, but definitely on the matte side. If you want something shinier, I would recommend Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting in Vengeful, but know that anything with a shine will not wear as long. For cheaper options, I like the Clinique Chubby Stick in Maraschino and NYX Butter Lipstick (they have changed the names recently, but there is a bright, true red in there). I love the color of Ruby Woo, but find it very uncomfortable to wear.

  5. Sof says:

On lipstick for your wedding: you’ll likely end up trying a number of different reds before you find the right one. I think I tried (and returned) between 5-10 different products before I found the lipstick I wore for my wedding. Being able to try on the products in-store is a huge benefit, but I was shopping at CVS. I ended up using the Maybelline Super Stay 24-hour lip color in Berry Persistent, which can be lighter or deeper red depending on how many coats you use.

  6. JE says:

I’m an almost-everyday red lipstick wearer, so I have my favorites. But for an event like a wedding, you need a color that will not only stay on you without needing touch-ups, but will also survive kisses without transferring to the groom. I was just in a play set in the 40s where a young lady had to repeatedly make out with a co-actor, and she found the L’Oreal Infallible liquid lipstick stayed on through it all. She liked Continuous Crimson; I preferred Infallible Red. I would definitely suggest allowing plenty of time to test formulas by eating sloppy, greasy food and making out with your fiance before the big event.

  7. DLB-NYC says:

For your wedding, please make sure to try the lipstick on while wearing a white shirt. I found that the white dress makes the lipstick look more intense, so the color I was happy with for the wedding date was different than the ones I wore with my usual clothes. And I almost always wear intense lipstick

The Find: Bright and Striped

For the past few years, the wardrobes of many influencers have tilted toward the beige and boring.  I’m all for a good basic, but staple pieces can only take you so far.  Sometimes, you need to wear something that has a little something extra, and this sale-priced tee certainly does.
