Ask Belle: Highlighter Tips & Tricks

Aug 13, 2015

Dear Belle,

My sister-in-law did my make last weekend and I loved it.  She used a highlighter powder on my cheeks and tried to teach me how, but I’m not getting it.  Do you use highlighter?  Have a technique you could recommend?  Product you like?

Love the blog.  Christina

I love highlighter.  Once you start wearing it, you’ll never go back.  I have my Mom hooked on it too.  We use Hourglass Ambient Lighting (we call it our ‘magic blurring powder’).

I don’t apply my highlighter “correctly.”  I actually use it to blend out the edges of my blush.  I just buff it one with this Urban Decay brush.  It really smooths out the look.

Powder. This Byrdie.com tutorial is the easiest way to apply highlighter and should be more than sufficient for most wearers.  Along with the Hourglass powder, I can recommend this inexpensive e.l.f. Baked Highlighter and this Mary Lou Luminizer from TheBalm.

Liquid. Some readers will be happier with a liquid highlighter.  I use that when I really need to make my skin pop (photos, no sleep, etc.).  This Chantecaille liquid highlighter is the gold standard.  For something under-$10, this NYX Liquid Illuminator is perfect.  As for how to apply it, TBD has the tutorial.

Pencil. Looking for just a simple, easy highlighter look?  Adding just a bit of highlighter to the eye area can really make your eyes pop.  You can achieve the look with a highlighter pencil like this one from Anastasia or this $5 Milani highlighter.

Is “did my make” the new phrase or please please please is this just a typo from “did my makeup”?

I am officially middle-aged; Nielsen ratings don’t cater to me. So I really am asking.

The Becca highlighters are amazing!! Their powders and poured liquid are some of the best on the market. I also love Mary Lou Manizer as well! I love how highlighting finishes off my make-up look. I apply it right on my cheekbones above my blush, a little over my eye brows, down my nose, cupid’s bow and my chin. It adds a lovely sheen and brightens the face,

    Hi Belle,

Thank you for the post on highlighting…I too am never quite sure how to apply them subtly. Stopped by Sephora Friday to pick up the Hourglass Ambient Lighting powder; while there I also tried their Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint, and am now officially obsessed. Although I have decent skin for my age (55 – yikes), it tends to be a bit dull. The Skin Tint goes on smoothly with a damp sponge, providing medium coverage and a lovely glow. Bonus points for long wearing coverage! Thank you providing the recommendation.

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.

Too Many Tabs: April 19, 2024

This week, I fell mindlessly into my phone more than I think I ever have. My screen time went from 3.5 hours per day to 5 hours per day. But the increased eye strain did lead to some good finds. Just going to leave this right here.  (I really need to work on “Didn’t make […]
