Ask Belle: Black Shoes for Evening

Aug 10, 2015

Belle,

My cousin is getting married next month and I need a pair of black shoes to go with a black cocktail dress.  I’ve tried on close to 20 pair but they’re either boring or too sexy.  Does every shoe need to have cheap glitter or a 6″ heel?  I only have $100 dollars to spend.  Please help.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when I go to a cocktail or formal occasion and see women wearing their basic black work pumps with cocktail dresses.  But with so many gaudy choices on the market, it’s no wonder women default to a comfortable work shoe when in doubt.

To prevent you from suffering a similar fate, let’s find you something elegant and stylish in your price range.  My favorite places to hunt for occasion shoes and accessories are 6pm.com, Macy’s, and DSW.  Here are some choices that caught my eye.

Chinese Laundry Lilliana Heel ($69)

I love these.  I think they bring just the right amount of drama.  The curved lines are terrific.

Ivanka Trump Gifford Heel ($49)

Mesh Cut Out Sandal ($70)

This is a more modern look, but the mesh brings a real lightness to it.  I also like these simpler Qupid heels with a mesh cap toe.

INC Reesie Sandal ($99)

I think this bow is totally adorable.  It would be so pretty with a dress with a fuller skirt.  And if you like the idea of a more dramatic bow, these Betsey Johnson heels have it.

Chase & Chloe Fringe Heel ($20)

Fringe is a pretty hot trend, and this price makes it possible to indulge inexpensively.

I own that pair of Ivanka heels (in a gorgeous cobalt blue) and they are my favorite formal event shoes ever. They’re surprisingly comfortable, which I didn’t expect since they are so delicate.

Anyone have ideas for a dressy/evening shoe with a low heel (sub 3 inches)?

How about the Vince Camuto Court Ankle Strap sandal?

I would give 9 West a shot. They always have a selection of dress pumps in varying heel heights, and their price point for shoes (not boots) is rarely above $100.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
