Ask Belle: Hats for the Summer Sun

Jul 1, 2015

Hi Belle,

I just moved to South Carolina from Oregon and I can’t take the sun.  (I know.)  It’s bleaching my hair and I feel like I aged 10 years.  I wear a baseball hat most days but it’s not exactly cute.  Do you have some other suggestions?  I see women wearing cute hats but I never see any for sale.  Thoughts?

Love the Blog! Ally

The older I get, the more I notice how my skin changes after a day in the sun.  So I know exactly what you’re talking about.  SPF helps, but who knows how long you’ll be outside or how intense the sun will be?  I own a couple of hats for the pool and for just wearing around.

Personally, I like inexpensive straw hats.  They’re glamorous and casual at the same time.  Here are some suggestions.

H&M Straw Fedora ($13)

I also like this wider brim hat from H&M.

Striped Floppy Hat ($15)

Gottex Vivienne Hat ($90)

*not exactly inexpensive, but I loved the shape.

Floppy Straw Hat ($14)

Mixit Fedora ($8)

Not feeling straw?  Or looking for a hat you can wear in all seasons?

BP Felt Hat ($38)

I love the bohemian feel of this mauve hat from Nordstrom.

General hint – the wider/floppier the brim, the more likely it is to blow away in the wind – also big movie-star sunglasses that are UV rated will also keep the sun off of a large portion of your face.

The felt hat is adorable, but I’m guessing the weather in SC is similar to DC (humid, temps regularly in the 90s). It feels far too sticky outside to wear my felt hat past early May here.

I would definitely second the suggestion for a big, floppy straw hat. Nordstrom and Anthropologie usually put a bunch on sale this time of year, and there are many styles that don’t scream octogenarians-playing-golf.

  3. Emily says:

Any ideas for hats that come in sizes? One size fits all basically means “zero chance it will fit my huge noggin.”

  4. Amanda says:

I’d recommend a tightly woven hat with a UVA/UVB rating — check out REI and Zappos. The loose-weave hats are cute but pretty ineffective at sun protection.

Love hats!!! and they go with lots of outfit on the summer! <3

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.

Too Many Tabs: April 19, 2024

This week, I fell mindlessly into my phone more than I think I ever have. My screen time went from 3.5 hours per day to 5 hours per day. But the increased eye strain did lead to some good finds. Just going to leave this right here.  (I really need to work on “Didn’t make […]
