Happy Hour: Candy from Across the Pond

Jun 19, 2015

In January, Hershey’s won a lawsuit that stopped the flow of British-made candy to America from the largest private importer.  Brand’s like Cadbury are still available, but the candy is made in Pennsylvania, with a different recipe.  Many of my well-traveled friends (and The New York Times) claim that the candy is far superior to the American-made version, largely due to ingredient restrictions.

So what’s a chocolate lover to do?  Amazon.  Amazon will solve everything.

I ordered the candy from Stateside Candy Co.. The process was fairly simple.  I placed my order, and received an e-mail from the seller a couple of days later asking what I wanted (with some suggestions of popular items).  A few weeks later, I was enjoying a delicious Curly Wurly.

Imported candy could be a fun thing to serve at a barbecue or birthday party.  I also like the idea of using it as a wedding favor.  It’s just something unique to serve guests, and it’s a bit of a conversation starter.  I posted the above photo on Instagram and ended up with lots of comments on people’s favorite treats.

So what do you wear when eating candy at home? (Whatever the hell you want, but since this is a fashion blog, let’s pretend there’s suggested attire.)

Old Navy Soft Lounge Pants ($14)

My usually at-home attire is a pair of Zella leggings.  However, it’s always nice to mix it up your attire, even if you are the only one who will see it.

These soft lounge pants from Old Navy are a great buy.  Very comfortable, kind of fun with the pineapple print, and perfect for relaxing.  They also come in a grey print.

I also found these jogger sweats from Catharine Malandrino.  For something you could be seen in public in, try these Vince silk jogger pants.

Happy Hour

    Cadbury Crunchies are everything!

  2. Orla says:

Fun fact, Cadburys also has a manufacturing plant in Ireland. Since Irish dairy products are renowned for their quality, when conducting blind test tastes for British Army ration packs, there was a choice between Irish and British Dairymilk. They chose Irish!

Why have I never heard of or experienced this goodness? Looks temptingly yummy and impossible not to binge! Now I shall go to Amazon and order a few because it is just too much for me to resist.

Cannot see this post.. I’m on a terrible diet, and I’m a (insane) chocolate lover! lol

  5. Phoebe says:

I am so angry Cadbury lost that battle…I would seek out imported Cadbury because the Hershey’s version is too sweet and tastes terrible in comparison.

Thanks for the tip!! I’ll have to checkout Stateside Candy Co.

  6. Mia says:

Mint Aero, Crunchie, DairyMilk, Finger of Fudge, and my all time fave Flake – “the crumbliest, flakiest chocolate, tastes like chocolate never tasted before..” (80s TV ad but oh so true).

  7. Angela says:

Having just spent 3 weeks in the UK and a native, lol, their chocolate is far superior to North American. A Scottish dairy farmer told me it is because they use liquid ‘real’ milk and we use dried milk powder…not sure what’s true but I broufht back several kilos

  8. jessica says:

Kit Kats made by Nestle in the UK are FAR superior to the Kit Kats made in the US by Hershey!

  9. GoGoGo says:

This post kind of cracks me up. What a happy happy hour.

Belle, I didn’t think I could love your blog more. But between the candy and line – “Whatever the hell you want, but since this is a fashion blog, let’s pretend there’s suggested attire” – apparently I can!

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
