7) Actress Rebel Wilson allegedly lies about her age. Isn’t it sad that a woman feels the need to hide her age in order to generate opportunities?

In all fairness, the Rebel Wilson story is from an Australian tabloid, and the source they cite stayed anonymous. And seriously, in the last few years since she’s gotten famous, this is the FIRST time someone has claimed she’s older? That’s a pretty big secret to keep. More importantly though, who cares?!?!? 29, 36, 58, she’s still funny as hell.
It’s a ridiculous double standard. If the tabloids found out that Leonardo DiCaprio or George Clooney were older than they originally said they were, no one would care.
Related to that: isn’t it telling that men’s magazines never have an “Age Issue,” the way high-fashion women’s magazines like VOGUE do? It seems we all care too much about how “gracefully aged” certain actresses like Helen Mirren or Meryl Streep are, but no one’s bugging Harrison Ford or Clint Eastwood to do a men’s “age” shoot.
I’m not sure that she is lying about her age, but if she is, I don’t think it is sad that she FEELS like she has to lie…I say good for her, she figured out how to game the system and find opportunities to let her talent shine. What is sad is that there are so many managers/casting agents/directors that would write someone off for daring to be older than a 22 year old ingenue.
That seems like two sides of the same coin to me. Why can’t she be talented and fun and her real age? Because casting agents won’t accept her if she isn’t young. It’s kind of like people who won’t be friends with you because you have an R or a D after your name. It’s sad to write someone off because they’ve crossed some invisible rubicon.
Yep. And just today I saw this article about Maggie Gyllenhaal being told she was “too old” at 37 to play a 55 year old male lead’s love interest (https://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/may/21/maggie-gyllenhaal-too-old-hollywood). No wonder some actresses (whether the rumors are true or not) feel compelled to lie about their age to casting.
