Mahatma-Ghandi-Quote-1

***

1) Finding a mentor is a challenge, but it can be even more difficult when the prospective mentor is a man.  Cosmopolitan offers tips on how to handle common problems with opposite-sex mentorship.

2) Looking for spring flats?  These bright Topshop flats caught my eye.  I also like these laser-cut, metallic flats from Steve Madden.

3) The Food Babe has turned her crusade against food additives into big business. Recently named one of the most influential people on the Internet, her claims are challenged by scientists on Slate, NPR, and Gawker.  They argue that her posts are little more than social-media fueled disinformation that exploit the “scientific ignorance” of the public.

4) This Michael Kors dress with crochet panels is boho-chic for women who want more emphasis on the chic.

5) The New York Times features an interesting opinion piece on why college costs students so much. (Spoiler: It’s not a lack of public funding.)

6) Nic + Zoe is a mid-price brand that’s piqued my interest.  I adore this printed, sleeveless shell.  And this cobalt, textured dress would look lovely under a blazer.  They also offer a plus-size line.

7) The Washington Post tackles the complicated origin story of ISIS and the influence of Saddam Hussein’s Baathist loyalists.

  1. Maddy says:

The Food Babe is just so irresponsible. Truly nothing worse than an individual with a powerful platform using it to spread fear-based “science” to the masses.

  2. Rachel says:

Here’s a rebuttal to the NY Times article that reaffirms it is, in part, due to a lack of public funding.

  3. Monica says:

I don’t know if it’s certain industries where having a male mentor / sponsor is fraught with danger but I work in IT and ALL my coworkers are men. All my bosses are men. And I’ve never had an issue with boundaries or anything like that, I’ve had a lot of supportive mentors and while we aren’t hanging out getting coffee (do people have time for that?) we foster close working relationships and there is a lot of knowledge transfer. It would really stink if all the women who want to learn from their superiors have to deal with this hassle.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
