Ask Belle: Dresses for Election Night

Nov 3, 2014

Hi Belle,

This year I will be attending my first election party at my boyfriend’s office. Can you find me a great dress to impress his boss for under $200?

Thanks! Tasha

Your average D.C. election night party is a post-work gathering where attendees wear business attire.  So let’s talk about dresses that can go from day-to-night.

Felicity & Coco Midi Sheath ($118)

This Felicity & Coco dresses is one of my favorites for day-to-night wear.  Wear it with a blazer and a basic pump for the office.  Add a fun shoe, a chunky bracelet, and a bit more makeup to convert this dress for evening.  The aubergine is my favorite color, but it also comes in black, blue or red.

If it’s long sleeve you’re after, I like this ivory dress from Cynthia Steffe and this modern, black-and-navy dress from NYDJ. I also like this T Tahari dress in a unique blue and black print with a short sleeve.  And don’t miss this French Connection sheath, which is the perfect blank canvas for your best accessories.

Looking for a dress that is a bit more cocktail?  I like this Anne Klein dress with lace sleeves and this Andrew Marc sleeveless dress with a mesh yoke.

Plus-size? This Lauren v-neck sheath is lovely in black or navy.  Petite? This wine-colored Amanda Uprichard dress is nice.

One more tip?  Wear shoes you can stand in for hours.  There are never enough chairs at these events, and you can be stuck standing for quite some time.  Also, you may wind up walking to other parties after yours winds down, so comfy shoes are a must.
