Ask Belle: Small Wallets

Sep 29, 2014

Dear Belle,

I have a question about wallets.  I know you carry a long wallet, but I’m searching for something smaller.  The smaller the better, really.  I would love some ideas on stylish options in the under-$150 or so price range.

Thank you, hope that you can help, Lizzie

When buying a wallet you have three things you need to decide: size, material and color.  I like a larger leather wallet in a metallic or bright color for versatility.  Metallics and bright colors can be carried with almost any neutral handbag without clashing.

If you want something smaller, you can choose a compact version of a fold-over or zip wallet or you can go all-in on small with a card wallet.  Here are some options.

Kate Spade Cedar Street Wallet ($78)

This gold wallet from Kate Spade would be my number one choice for a small wallet.  It has a few credit card slots, an ID window and a small zip pocket on the rear.  Other options include this bright, zip-up Barney’s New York wallet that comes in several colors and this Lodis fold-over wallet that has a classic look.

Need more storage in a small package?  This Michael Kors Saffiano wallet has several card slots and an internal zip pocket.

If I’m carrying my laptop bag, I keep things more streamlined with an Everlane card holder (I love the dark plum).  J.Crew’s magic wallet is also a good option because it has space inside for a little bit of cash.  They make it in a metallic combo ($15!) and an embossed python.  I also like this forest green card holder from Dorothy Perkins for $6.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
