Ask Belle: Fall Hues for 2014

Sep 15, 2014

Dear Belle,

Burgundy is the big color for fall but it isn’t flattering against my skin tone.  I once wore burgundy nail polish and made me look like I had jaundice.  Can you suggest some other colors?  I want to break out of my neutral rut, but burgundy is out of the question.

Thanks! Dani

Jaundice is not a good look for anyone.  But you’re in luck, because there are certainly colors beyond burgundy on the hot list for the fall season.

Olivier Battino Peacock Dress ($205)

Teal. Dark, peacock teal is always a good color for fall, and this year, it’s back on the radar.  This Battino dress does double-duty as a relaxed number or a professional one.  I also like this Donna Morgan mixed media dress ($158); try it with a grey moto jacket.

I also found this House of Fraser belted jacket (totally chic), and this vegan leather jacket.  This inexpensive collarless blouse from Westbound, and this BCBGeneration button-up are both worth a look.  Plus-size?  Try this Modcloth cardigan in dark teal.

American Living Cap Sleeve Dress ($79)

Eggplant. I love purple.  My love for the color borders on obsession.  I actually have to temper how many purple things I purchase. This dress is the kind of item that I would find difficult to pass up.

This structured Kay Unger dress is another great option; it’s perfect for professional cocktail events.  This pleated blouse with a blouson sleeve is also a good choice.  I also found this $30 Ellen Tracy skirt that’s a great option for ladies in the intern-price point.  I’m also intrigued by these Spanx stretch corduroy leggings.  I may need to try them.

Petite? This Land’s End flounce dress would look great with tall boots.

hmtieblouse1H&M Lyocell Blend Top ($25)

Mustard. I bought this top the second I saw it.  Why?  Because I own a dark green skirt, and they are going to look awesome together.  Very Mad Men.  You could also wear it with midnight navy, grey or off white.  (No brown, too drab.  No black, too much like the Steelers’ colors–unless you’re into that.)

I also found this mustard cardigan from H&M, and this inexpensive Mary Portas dress (limited sizes).  Charlotte Russe also has a relaxed, open blazer (but skip the midriff-baring top).  Land’s End also offers a casual crew neck sweater in plus-sizes.

I’d also toss a deep green into the mix–it’s a beautiful fall color and looks good on almost everyone.

  2. Sarah says:

Belle, first of all love the jewel tone colors here. Second of all, I am very happy and proud of you for using a semi-colon correctly! I know that sounds patronizing, but I don’t mean it to be. I know you’ve mentioned that this area is not your strong suit but you mastered the art of NOT writing a comma splice. This is the sentence to which I’m referring:”This structured Kay Unger dress is another great option; it’s perfect for professional cocktail events.”

  3. Jenn S. says:

Ha, I appreciate that you cautioned against the Steelers look. I live in the greater Pittsburgh region and, yeah, we don’t need any more of that nonsense, even unintentionally.

  4. Sarah says:

Belle, that is great! I know it doesn’t come easy, but it IS important. You are a role model for my students! Hard work pays off. 🙂

I just wanted you to know that it wasn’t going unnoticed!
