1) My earliest memory is from when I was three-years-old.  I remember making a Christmas ornament at my pre-school.  It was my first encounter with glitter, and it was momentous.  I have a few more memories from that spring/summer–my birthday party, dislocating my shoulder, walking my German Shepherd–but they’re hazy.

This article from Aeon.co examines why we can’t remember much from before the age of seven.  It discusses when children start to forget, and why the memories might be lost.

2) I am so in love with these Bionda Castana pumps.  How much PB&J can I stand to eat this month?

3) My friend T and I had a good laugh over 10 Food Promises Every Girl Deserves from Her Man.  If only she and I just needed ten.

4) Gap has some stylish casual options for fall.  This t-shirt has a great back-button detail.  I also love a good tab-front pant.  And don’t miss this And this sweatshirt dress in your choice of grey or pale pink looks very cozy.

5) Slate has an interesting piece on what happens to homeowners who holdout as everything around them is developed into commercial and retail properties.

6) I bought this Physician’s Formula Resurfacing Serum on a lark, and I.love.it.  The fine lines between my eyes have definitely softened, and unlike many serums, it doesn’t dry my skin.  Now I’m tempted to try their dark spot corrector.

7) Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop newsletter wants to teach you how to make your bed.  Because if you aren’t ironing your sheets, you’re doing it wrong. (Does this woman live on the planet Earth?)

8) Forever21 has some cute, inexpensive jackets right now.  This long collarless coat in blush pink is great.  I also like this quilted bomber jacket–the quilting is a cool geometric print.  And this slouchy knit jacket is perfect for the plane or lazy Sundays on the couch.  Plus-size?  This hooded utility coat is adorable.

9) In depressing news from the Wall Street Journal, it only takes a net worth of $10,400 to be richer than most millenials.

10) The West Elm catalog is my guilty pleasure.  I purchased this boxwood wreath for my front door.  These storage boxes have a cool print like Starling feathers.  I also think these oversized vases would look great on a console table.

11) My friend Sarah and I spent my all-too-short summer break in Glacier National Park.  She posted some amazing shots of the Park and of the night sky in the Whitefish area on her blog.

12) I remember when Emerson Fry was just a lady making oversize flower pins in her garage.  Now, she’s creating beautiful, modern fashions that everyone is fawning over.  I am obsessed with the print on this scarf.  I love the big, oversized cable knit sweaters.  And this oversized coat is the stuff dreams are made of.

Any recommendations about places to stay in Glacier? I’m going in a couple weeks. Thanks!

  2. Sam says:

I love Emerson Fry but dang, her stuff gets more expensive each season.

    • Belle says:

It is pricey. It does feel a bit weird to charge DvF prices for a no namer. I think I might order something to see if the quality justifies it or if the brand is just luring in fangirls to pay exorbitant prices.

      • Aubrey says:

If you do order something, would you post a review on the blog? I had never heard of the brand before your post, but the coats are gorgeous, and I would be tempted to start saving up for one if there is actual quality behind the glossy presentation.

  3. Emily says:

I agree with Sam – although, I took the plunge on a coat last year and do not regret it. It is a gorgeous coat that flatters and always receives compliments. And her flash sales of overstock / slightly off pieces are usually pretty good.

  4. Addie says:

That memory article was so interesting. I have a clear memory of asking my dad “why is mommy fat?” And him telling me she wasn’t fat she was pregnant. Haha. Since my only sibling was born when I was 2 1/2, the timing of that memory is well established. But I have an earlier memory of my mom giving me a bath in the sink. She knew it was a legitimate memory when I added that I was in the sink because my dad was recaulking the tub. She couldn’t believe I remembered that and neither could I.

    • Anna says:

How did you know what recaulking was?!?! I definitely have memories in 2-3 range, because they were from before we moved into our house when I was three. I think one of my earliest I was an infant and remember laying in a room in some sort of cradle/baby seat in our old apartment and seeing people in the next room through a doorway. I also remember trying to ride a relative’s dog like a pony while the grownups weren’t watching when we visited Cuba when I was two.

    • Mary says:

There is a lot of recent research that things that happen before language is fully developed is less likely to be remembered as explicit memory (memory that involves specific details) but is often remembered as implicit memory (often triggered by emotions and smells, without specific details). As this article states, events that were highly charged emotionally are much more likely to be remembered. There is fascinating work being done with people who suffered trauma early in their life that helps them re-remember memories that are in the implicit category and connect with explicit memories to remove some of the emotional charge from the memories.

I have done a lot of research on this topic as I have several family members profoundly affected by early life trauma. I am now studying to become a therapist, and this is one of my primary interests right now.

  5. Elz says:

    Those heels are amazing.

  6. Julia S. says:

I have been looking for a soft, hefty, warm sweater that is long enough to wear with leggings and preferably cabled – and Emerson Fry’s is PERFECT! But spending $360 on a sweater is not something I’m comfortable with doing. Any suggestions for alternatives that are more around the $100 range?

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
