Iris & Ink Ponte Drape Dress ($150)
Burgundy is back! Pair this fall hue with navy, grey, camel or charcoal. But please, please, do not pair it with black. It’s a bit harsh, softer is better.
Dresses. This sleeveless I&I dress has a great shape. Wear it to work or a fall wedding. Looking for something less expensive? I like this textured H&M dress, and this fit-and-flare from Limited. Plus-size? This ripple cocktail dress from Asos is nice.
Sweaters. I love this Brooks Brothers shawl collar sweater. Banana Republic also has a fun style with side zips. BB Dakota also has a basic under-$50 option. Petite? This WHBM open cardi (also in misses) is lovely.
Bottoms. This sleek burgundy pencil from WHBM, and these under-$75 trousers from Gap are both good choices. Plus-size? Land’s End has a pair of burgundy cords that would look great with a navy sweater.
Shoes. These Pour la Victoire pumps have a truly unique shape. Looking for a lower heel? These d’Orsay pumps are a good place to start. Into the booties trend? These Steve Madden stiletto boots are pretty chic.
Thanks for all the suggestions Belle! Any hints for a more sturdy-heeled boot in a similar color? The parking lot at work would break those pretty stilettos in about a week 🙂
Not yet, give it a few weeks.
I’m looking forward to the same thing.
Here’s a question for you Belle–
I’m a believer that cheap thrills are exactly what they purport to be, cheap. But how do you decide how to wade through the junk to find the gems in department stores. Macy’s has always been my convenient go-to, but more and more their selection is limited to their store labels: Alfani, American Rag, I-N-C, Style & Co., etc. There are several pieces that are really beautiful, but I don’t want to waste my money on junk. Any insight?
Off-topic: I accidentally ripped a small hole in the elbow of my favorite wool cardigan. It’s small enough that it can definitely be darned without it showing too much. Does anyone know of anywhere in DC that can handle a repair like that?
Is anyone in your circle of friends a knitter? It’s a really easy fix – I’ve used these directions successfully

Local yarn stores sell cards of reinforcing thread (Fibre Space in Old Town and I think Looped Yarn Works in Dupont). It’s similar to the little bit of yarn that used to come with a good sweater. Otherwise 1-2 plies of embroidery thread if it’s a tough color to match will work.
What about gray tights and black shoes/boots with this? Can you use SOME black with this color? Love that dress.
That does violate the 2-in-1 rule though!
