Belle’s Closet: Michael Kors Selma Satchel

Jul 2, 2014

From the moment I opened my Rebecca Minkoff Mini-MAB satchel ($395), I was a dedicated RM Girl.  I loved that bag beyond measure.  I recommended it to everyone.  Then, last year, I decided to purchase another Mini-MAB and was horribly disappointed.

The leather wasn’t as buttery soft.  The liner was flimsier.  And the metal hardware had no weight to it and lacked that satisfying metallic click.  I needed an alternative.

Kors Selma Satchel ($358) // Kors Sutton Satchel ($328) // Kors Reese Satchel ($368)

I purchased the Selma satchel in red, and I love it.  The leather is nice quality, the liner feels substantial enough to last and the hardware doesn’t feel cheap.  It has enough internal pockets to keep thins organized and a removable shoulder strap.

The bag comes in lots of great colors from basic black to bold teal, and the patent leather option (in four colors) is on sale for $268.  And for you silver lovers, some of the colors come with silver hardware.

The Sutton satchel is another unique choice with a modern shape.  It also has exterior pockets for more storage.  And don’t mind that silly logo medallion, you can easily remove it.  Like the Selma, a few of the colors are on sale at Macy’s.

Lastly, this Reese satchel has outer zippered pockets to keep everything organized.  The shape is a great classic for the office, but casual enough for every day.  I also love the bright berry color.

I’m glad that I found a mid-price handbag line that is well-made, stylish and available in a variety of colors.  It’s the kind of bag that I think I’ll be carrying for years to come.

I hate when companies change a product you love. I had the Coach legacy checkbook wallet for around 7-8 years and it wasn’t even starting to show its age. Then it was stolen at work. I planned to replace it at some point but my parents surprised me with one so I didn’t see it in person until it arrived in the mail. The inside is now lined with plastic instead of leather and there’s a seam right at the top of the ID window that makes it a real struggle to get your license out. I ultimately kept it, but I was disappointed. And I now have my eye on the Sutton satchel!

I only buy Michael Kors bags. Have yet to be disappointed in the quality.

I have a question about the MK bags. The strap looks really small, is it large enough to go over your shoulder? That’s how I tend to wear my bags as it gets annoying just holding them.

    • Belle says:

It will fit over the shoulder, it isn’t uncomfortable, there’s not a lot of extra room by any means.

    • M says:

Like Belle, I have the Selma satchel. If you are talking about the handles, the answer is no (unless you are very petite, perhaps…but even then, I probably wouldn’t wear it that way). The shoulder strap that is intended for that purpose, on the other hand, is long enough that the bag hangs at hip level on me (I am 5’8-9″) when worn on one shoulder.

      • Belle says:

See, I can get it over my shoulder, and I’m not super petite. So I guess the best answer is to go to a Macy’s and try the thing on and decide if you can do that.

Looks like these straps are adjustable too, which is nice. That’s my biggest complaint about my MAB, the strap is a little too long to wear comfortably over my shoulder, but just a little too short to wear across my body.
