Ask Belle: The Basics of Blush

May 28, 2014

Dear Belle,

I recently started wearing makeup every day and I’m clueless on how to apply blush.  Can you give me some tips?  Also, what blush should I use?

Thanks, Camilla

Proper application depends on face shape and what your goal is.  Makeup Forever explains how to apply blush for highlighting, sculpting and to achieve a healthy glow.  Drop Dead Gorgeous Daily has tips on how to apply blush to accentuate your face shape.

My favorite blush brush is from Bobbi Brown, but it’s a bit pricey.  I like it because the loose construction gives you a light application that you can build to your preferred look.  If you’re looking for something less expensive, try this brush from Ulta.

However, if your new to blush, you would probably do better with an angled brush.  This will allow you to use the brush for blush or highlighting and contour.  Try this $8 brush from Real Techniques.

I’ve never really worn blush on a regular basis because my cheeks have a decent amount of redness already. That said, these seem like great tips!

I love the coconut water gelee blushes from josie maran. I was totally skeptical of them at first because I think the coconut water is a bit of a gimmick, but then I tried the darkest color (I’m olive complected) and it’s sheer, gorgeous, and hard to screw up. Plus it looks great on an otherwise bare face or just a little bit of tinted moisturizer in a way that powder blush doesn’t.

Would you mind changing the link to the Makeup Forever demo? It brings you to a pretty white dress, but not helpful for make up needs.

The longest lasting blushes I’ve ever tried are from Illamasqua. They’re pricier than drugstore brands, and comprable to other brands at Sephora, but I never have to reapply during the day, even on hot days. They have a lot of pigment though.

Best, most affordable makeup brushes are from ELF. I use the angled brush, blush brush, angled eyeliner brush and a couple others. Their ‘premium’ line is worth it, but even their basic line is great.
